How much difference does it make? |

Big. We got a "free" download speed boost when they turned on DOCSIS 3.0. Went from 6 Mbit to something higher (they're coy about the exact number, but I've measured up to 21 Mbit with Shaperprobe) right away.
The larger benefit of DOCSIS 3.0 is that another standard will not be needed for quite some time = your modem will be good as long as it lasts. DOCSIS 3.0 can support a connection speed limited only by the number of channels available & characteristics of the provider's network. There's no longer a protocol limitation, as there was with DOCSIS 1.0 and 2.0. |

Well my internet company used to offer these internet services...
3Mbps down 256Kbps up 7Mbps down 512kbps up 10Mbps down 800kbps up They have offered these for the last 8-10 years. We finally got smart and stopped renting a modem so I got a high performance DOCSIS 3.0 modem so we now dont pay $6 a month for the modem. A few months ago the "signal" light went from green to blue signalling that DOCSIS 3.0 was availible, I checked my internet company's website and they did upgrade everything. Now these are the packages they offer.... 15Mbps down 1Mbps up 25Mbps down 2Mbps up 60Mbps down 6Mbps up. When I called them I told them I wanted to upgrade to the new services. Our bundle was left the same except I added 2 HD TV boxes and upgraded to the 25Mbps plan, and our bill is $50 CHEAPER a month. So we more then doubled our internet speed because of DOCSIS 3.0, and we are saving $50 a month because we used to get their top of the line internet, now we get their middle of the road internet, so I would call it a huge upgrade. |

Quoted: I pay $49.95/mo for Cox. I had a Motorola DOCSIS 2.0 modem, got about 6mbps. I spent $100 on a Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 modem, and average 30mbps, bursting to 50+ depending on the network. Still paying $49.95/mo. That's the kind of info I'm looking for. A few more anecdotes like yours and I can sufficiently rationalize the expense. |

If you got it from your cable company then you are most likely paying for it per month so buying your own DOCSIS 3.0 modem is worth the $$$ After 1-2 years it will pay for itself. I got a top of the line Motorolla one and it paid for itself after 18 months |

I'm just curious if taking advantage of the new DOCSIS 3.0 infrastructure will benefit me. |

I'm curious about this as well. Time Warner told me that if I upgraded to the Extreme I would need to use thier modem because thier Docsis 3 does is not compatible with the Docsis 3 modems you buy on Amazon etc.
I'm currently on Turbo which is Docsis 2.0, but he did let slip that a Docsis 3.0 modem would work with that particular service. |
