9 platters from 3 different hard drives jumbled together with no idea which platter belongs to which drive.

Not something the average Joe could do, but for some data recovery specialists, I would say "Yes" as long as the platters aren't damaged.....

So to be sure bury the platters in a pile of thermite and light a magnesium ribbion and enjoy the show?

Yeah, that would do it.......

I am a little short on the Thermite and magnesium ribbon combo at the moment, so slugs will have to do.....

What I've heard is no.  Once the platters in a drive are moved relative to each other the sector alignment no longer matches between the platters.  You could probably read a platter, but would only get snippets of data at best.
