I'm working on a co-worker's PC since it started giving the BSOD. It originally had Vista on it but our corporate VPN client doesn't play well with Vista (even though it's supposed to) so the machine was rolled back to XP. It was working fine until recently.

Anyway, I'm trying to install off the XP CD I have (it's a legit copy, as in really from MS) and I'm trying to use the XP key I was provided (from her old machine). I didn't think to grab the key off the box before I started the re-install. Well, the key isn't working. Could it be different OEM versions requiring different keys? Maybe hers is an OEM key and mine isn't an OEM version?

Yup, CD keys are tied to their install media. Not 1:1 but in blocks (a given key will work for a certain range of install CDs). You can't mix and match a random CD key with a random install CD.

The only exception is corporate keys.

Damn. Thanks. I was afraid of that. She lives about 40 miles from me and I can't get the CD from her at work since I'm on vacation.

Have her mail it to you.

Get the key off her box () and download the OEM version of XP for that key.

Oh, wait, if it's a Vista key that won't work.

if you call the manufacturer of the pc they will mail you the cd's for a small fee.

Ah, the days of keeping track of install keys...

Now I just download the latest version of some Linux distro and forget about it..

I don't think Open Office is gonna help when the problem machine doesn't have an operating system...

Trust me, Linux was the first thing I thought of. Unfortunately I still haven't gotten the Linux VPN client to work either.

I think she's giving the PC to her son who's in the Army and coming in tomorrow for the holiday. With the quick turnaround needed the mail isn't an option. I'm going to see if she can meet me halfway somewhere. Thanks guys!

Which VPN are you trying to set up?  I've had pretty good luck w/ VNC on a couple of machines.

Also... since I help a lot of "remote" folks setup Linux, I've used this app a lot.  It helps when someone either can't/doesn't know how to set up their router for an incoming connection... It's pretty much dead nuts simple.  It's small enough, that if they are having trouble installing, they can put it on a Live CD, and in no time flat, I'm on their machine and I can figure out what the problem is.

Give it a looksie.. If you're using Ubuntu, it has Ubuntu .deb files for download, so it's just a matter of download, double click, install.

I'm trying to setup our corporate Cisco VPN client.

I use VNC at home and my friend was just telling me about TeamViewer. I need to check that out. But for work it's gotta be Cisco.

I've asked her significant other to make an ISO of the CD and put it on my FTP site. Hopefully he'll be able to do that when he gets off work this evening. Nothing's ever easy.
