My laptop is having major glitches after I installed SP3.  I have 2 instances of IE going (different amounts of RAM, like 100,000kb and 1000kb) but only one page up, sudden spikes in clock allocation that I can't view in task manager because the system locks up for a second or two (can turn on caps/num lock) then when it finally comes up off the task bar (I already had it open) its clock prioritization changes and I have no idea what it was using 100% for.

What the hell happened?  DId I just install SkyNet or something?

Done.  Ran SpybotSD, will be running CCleaner and malwarebytes shortly.

ETA:  I did a little research, and avg's background scanner (not the scheduled scanner, but the always on) can cause this problem if it's being "teased" by some malware of some sort.  It will drive avgsrx.exe crazy.

upgrade to an OS that isn't nearly 10 years old

I did upgrade.  I went from Vista Basic to XP Pro, something my laptop would friggin' run.  Hell, if I could I'd upgrade it further to 2000Pro.

The IT Director at my place of employment swears by XP SP2, and constantly makes comments like "I can't prove it, but it wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft purposely made SP3 buggy and bogged down to get people to move to Vista".  I think the tinfoil might be a little tight, but stranger things have happened.

I second running an independent anti-malware program.
