I'm trying to understand something about 3g and searching for info only got me more confused.

I have a CDMA phone (therefore no SIM card) with 3g internet access. Since I'm paying for that 3g service, does that mean I can buy a 3g USB dongle and access the web with my computer? How would that work if there's no SIM card to insert? Or have the phone companies made this impossible?

I think you need to get with your provider.

I know that my laptop modem 3g services are not connected to 3g/Internet for my phones.

If I allowed Internet on my phones ( I do not!), the service would be an additional charge for that particular line.

I use Verizon Wireless. Your provider may be different.

Verizon allows wired or bluetooth tethering without additional cost.

Thanks for the replies. I have Verizon. Then is that as simple as getting a compatible dongle? If that's the case, what's their selling point for the Mobile Hotspot service (which they don't mention is an extra charge)?

Only for a few phones. Otherwise it's around $15-30 per month extra, depending on your plan.

what's their selling point for the Mobile Hotspot service

the selling spot is that its magic to most people..

they dont know what they can do with what they have.

you can tell someone do this and that allday long if its not "officially " supported by the carrier many/most people wont do it

I have a Droid X which I know I keep seeing commericals for it's mobile hotspot capability (for another $15/month). I just did a quick search for PDAnet and it looks interesting. Thanks for the help!
