Hope someone can help.

Ok, so i have a laptop(Acer), which if i remember correctly the OS is on a partition that came from the factory. Now i think i have a failed master boot record. The hard drive itself is not making any audible failure noises, and i haven't pulled it from the chassis yet. I do have a 2.5" to usb adapter ready to go to work.

Big question is, if the OS partition is corrupt/damaged will the other partition with my data on it be fine? Is it as simple as plugging in the hard drive and recovering the data on the hopefully good partition, or do i need some type of software to ensure i get all my files back in safe condition?

This incident will teach me to back things up more proactively...

Thanks for any insight.

its doubtfull you will be able to run the recovery to reinstall windows.

i would verify the drive is bad.  then replace it and run the recovery cd's that came with it

Well, i'm not much interested on reinstalling windows or even keeping the machine past this point, it's 6+ years old, and i'm just interested in some files, mainly pictures, some cad files and some random word/excel/pp stuff. Lord knows if i have the recovery cd's that came with it, it's been through 2 moves and i might just put a ubuntu install on it.

Am i missing anything i should do before i go and pop the HD out of it?

that data partiton may or may not be there depending on how the drive is damaged.
is the drive works but has trash data, try Recuva.

A good ole' weekend project. Thanks for the lead! I'm not hearing it produce any noise what so ever, so i hope it's just the OS partition is corrupt or something with the MBR. Wish me luck!

Was completely successful in recovering everything i wanted to get. Didn't have to use any software, plugged HD into my adapter and we were off! 10 gigs of music and 4 other gigs of misc. stuff. Found out my laptop HD was a 4200 rpm hitachi... Specs are a Intel Centrino Pentium M processor at 1.8GHz, 512MB RAM, Centrino 2200 BG wireless card. Also took the cooling solution off and put new thermal paste on.

Funny thing was which i didn't even know was that one RAM module was on the back of the case, and the other was under the keyboard.
