| Bought a Seagate external hardrive a couple of months ago. We moved a bunch of pictures and our iTunes onto it and a few other things like research and papers for my wife's master's degree. I unplugged it the other day while moving some stuff around. I plugged it back in yesterday and it made some sounds like it's working, but the lights on the front don't come on and the computer can't find it. The thing is plugged in to power and the USB connection between the drive and the computer is plugged in as well. Any ideas on what the problem is? |

EDIT: with eveything pluged in under windows go to
My Computer > (right click) Manage > Disk Management.........see if your hard drive is listed here. /EDIT First thing to do is unplug everything on the drive first, if it has a power plug remove it. After waiting 30min plug it all back in some times this is all it takes if this does not work download a Ubuntu live CD have the drive plugged in then boot the computer off the live cd, see if ubuntu will see and work with the drive, if Ubuntu will work with the drive unmount it from ubuntu and all should be well if not you will have to do a forced mount of the drive. Depending on the drive in the enclose and the your computer you could try and just pull the drive out and stick it in you computer will see it. |

Quoted: Yeah, no lights = bad enclosure. The drive may be fine. The next step is to carefully remove the drive from the enclosure and try it somewhere else.EDIT: with eveything pluged in under windows go to My Computer > (right click) Manage > Disk Management.........see if your hard drive is listed here. /EDIT First thing to do is unplug everything on the drive first, if it has a power plug remove it.
