Anyone have any thoughts on ASUS laptops?   Good, bad?

Toshiba?

HP?

My 3 year old HP died and I need to shop for a new one...

I have three ASUS laptops and I am very pleased with them all.

The last one i bought is a 'lightweight' model with 14" screen and HDMI, etc etc.

Only thing I don't like, is the mousepad, vs. my HP business laptop.  I don't know if it's because I used that mouse for three years or what.

Otherwise my only complaint is the 6 hour battery life
some nights I keep telling myself I put the laptop (and arfcom) down when the battery dies....

Get whatever allows you a long warranty.  In my experience laptops break often enough that over a three year warranty, the warranty will pay for itself two or three times.

Asus is moving towards being a tier 1 computer manufacturer like Dell et al and have something to prove since they aren't quite there yet, so they're gtg.  Personally I've never had a single problem with an Asus product.

I would stay away from Toshiba. I know at least a few years ago they were a little more prone to kicking the bucket then the others.

But, yeah, a three year warranty is a good idea.  Something will get knocked loose by then that will make it worth it.

I had an issue with an ASUS motherboard.  Actually, it was 2 warranty returns before I got a working one so I guess you could say I had an issue with 2 ASUS motherboards.  I just wanted to balance the ASUS QC love.  I've always heard mixed reviews of their stuff.

I have a 6 year old Toshiba that's still running strong.  I have friends who love their Toshibas.

I have not bought a Toshitba product in 12 years running. Had a MB fry in my laptop in week 53 of ownership (only 1 year warranty).

Don't know about ASUS laptops but I use their MB's for my desktops I have built over the years and have never had a problem with any of them.

Z71V here, and although a bit older, was a smoking deal at the time.
Over clocking on board (turns a 1.6 into a 2.3), 6800 video card over clocked as well, 2 megs of ram, which is running windows 7, Autocad and most games without problems.

As stated, they are trying to be come more than just bare bone systems, and are a bit harder to find as a bare bones system if you want to build one up on your own.

The new systems are not the smoking deals of the past since you have to buy them already built, but the price can be right anyways for what you get for the money.

my roomate is quite the computer nerd and he has 3 asus so I am sure they are good quality otherwise he wouldnt have them,  I have had a compaq and an acer laptop and both worked very very well. I never get the service plans for them. but then most problems i can fix myself. If you dont have experience taking about laptops and replacing parts then i would recommend getting the service plan.

I've had one of their mother boards that has long been working expected life span and one of their netbooks. Good stuff. I like Dell also.
