I can't for the life of me seem to get the JRE plugin working. I've tried everything I've found online to no avail. It goes through the paces of installing and according to the package manager the stuff is there but when I look under Add-ons in Firefox 3.6.3 there isn't any JRE listed. When I go to javatester it tells me I don't have Java installed. I've tried what seems to work for everyone else and yet it's not working for me.

Any gurus have some ideas? This is 9.1 Ubuntu and 6.1.16 (I think) for Java.

I'm not current on this problem, but once upon a time folks with 64-bit systems were SOL regarding Java browser plugins without some fancy dancing.  If you're running such a system, that might be a place to start your research.

You’ll want to confirm that your system is configured properly for Sun’s JRE. This is a two-step process.

First, check that the JRE is properly installed by running the following command from a terminal.

java -version

You should get similar output

java version “1.6.0″

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0-b105)

Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.6.0-b105, mixed mode, sharing)

Testing Java Plugin for Firefox

open Firefox and typing about:plugins in the address bar and check for java plugin

Why not upgrade to 10.x ?

It's Ubuntu 9.10.  The ".10" is the month of the release and Canonical only releases in April and October.
Canonical screwed the pooch with Java in 9.10.  First they wanted to replace Sun Java with Open JDK, but they left the Sun package in the repository.  Then they decided not to update the Sun packages.  With 10.04, Sun Java is supported in the partner repository, but I believe it's still broken in 9.10.
I've seen lots of people report success with this procedure, but I haven't used it myself.

I checked the java version last night and it's definitely there. Just checked again and I have:

java version "1.6.0_16"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_16-b01)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.2-b01, mixed mode)

open Firefox and typing about:plugins in the address bar and check for java plugin

I should've mentioned that I checked here also and it's not listed.

No reason. Actually I saw the 10.x LTS listed when I went to Update Manager but I wanted to kill this bird first.

Well, maybe that's my answer. I guess I'll do the upgrade tonight and see if it resolves the problem. Thanks for the link. I'll check that out too when I get home.

For some reason I can ssh to my box but VNC isn't displaying the graphical side. Remote access seems to suck. I should try tunelling x maybe.

Grr. This ticks me off.

I have 9.1 in a VM on my work PC. On a whim I did exactly what I did last night to install the JRE through the package manager and it worked fine. Showed up immediately at javatester.org. Wonder why it's not working at home. Stupid computers.
