Finally bought a new computer.  Had been running an old compute with XP.  The DVD tray didn't work anymore and my photoshop software wouldn't run on it because of lack of memory.  So...I bought a new desktop computer.  Well, I can't find anything on this windows 7 bullshit.  No outlook express email, trying to find "my documents" and it doesn't recognise my external hard drive where I have several hundred dollars of music stored.

Any advise out there for an old fart who's sorry he switched.  If I could have, I'd have ordered it with XP.  This is a HP Slimline quad core 2.8, 6 gig memory, blu ray player.

There is no native email client with Windows 7. You'll need to download Windows Live Mail. I made the switch from Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail for the same reasons, and it's nice. I think you'll like it.

In computer management (start menu, right click on "computer" and go to "manage"), check the disk manager and see if it sees your hard drive. You may just need to assign it a new drive letter.

Outlook express is now Windows Live Mail.  It's part of the Windows Live package.  You can download and use it without joining.  My Documents is under C:\Users\(username)\My Documents.  It's also a shortcut right off the start menu, or on the side of any explorer window.

What is your external drive?  USB, Firewire, ESATA?

My Documents can be found by clicking the Folder Icon next to the IE icon by the Start button.

Try making sure your external drive is powered up. Unplug the USB connection and plug it back in again. If you are connected to the Internet, try letting Windows go online to search for a compatible driver if needed.

Switch to Thunderbird. Download it from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

My external is an Iomega HDD 120 gig, about 5 years old and I connect it with firewire.  Worked perfect with XP.

Check the Disk Management and see if the drive is detected.  Right click on 'Computer' and select 'Manage'.  The Computer Management screen will popup.  Look on the left and you will see Storage and Disk Management under that.  Your drive may show up there without a drive letter.  If it is there.  Just right click on the Iomega drive and select 'Change Drive Letter and Paths' and give it a drive letter.  You should be able to access the drive after this.

For email you can always use Thunderbird http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/

Firewire requires drivers in most cases, it's not like USB where it just works.  It's not the fault of the OS.  You had the drivers in XP but don't have them in Win7.  You may still be able to download them.

After scouring the Internet, I finally changed my external over to usb and it works now.  Am getting other things up and running.  Finally seems like I'm going to whip this thing called windows 7.  Am spending this morning transferring docs, images, and music to the new computer.  Man I sure accumulated a lot of junk over 5 years.  Thanks for your responses.
