So I have an Olympus E-520 DSLR with the 14-42mm F/3.5-5.6 kit lens.  I am thinking about buying a better lens, because I hear a lot that kit lenses tend to be on the low-quality side, and F/3.5 on the wide end is not much to be proud of.

Olympus has two lenses that are in my budget that look intersesting.  First, a 50mm prime macro (100mm equiv.) F/2.
Second, a 14-54mm F/2.8-3.5 zoom.  Both are about $450.

People rave about the sharpness of the 50mm F/2, and the 14-54mm F/2.8 has good reviews also.

I take a lot of kid photos, inside with and without flash (I have an external flash) and outside, and occasional non-kid pictures.

Which upgrade lens would you get?

If it were me, I'd go with the 14-54mm. The ability to take wide-angle shots will probably come in pretty handy, taking pics of running/playing kiddies.

go with the wide. unless you LOVE taking macros. I bought a 50mm 2.8 macro and it rarely ever comes out of the bag.
