So I got home to the familiar (ok, not THAT familiar) USPS priority mail box sitting on my front step yesterday.  It contained one of THESE.  Though I didn't buy it new, a fellow ARFCOMM'er made me a HECK of a deal on a used one that is in mint condition.  The Nikon 80-200 has been the object of my camera geek affection for a long time, and now I finally own it.  My wife thought it was a good idea to go ahead and by the camera gear BEFORE our first child is born in November, for planning purposes...I love that woman.

Pics to be posted eventually.  I took a few sample pics last night, and both the wife and I were suitably impressed....

The funny thing is I am increasingly brand agnostic.  Canon and Nikon both make GREAT gear.  When I bought my digital, it was because I had a small pile of Nikon accessories, and said, "well with this investment, I need to stick to Nikon."  The truth is, ALL of those accessories (lenses, flashes, etc...) have been upgraded in the past two years.  I COULD have made the switch to Canon with no economic loss, but just didn't see the upgrades coming.

I am VERY fortunate, my wife loves my photography, and doesn't blink when I say, "$600 lens."  Now, if I say "$600 gun", on the other hand, she blinks a little.  It is funny how these things work out.  But, in reality she is a gem in letting me indulge my equipment intensive hobbies, FOR NOW.  Come November, when we are new parents, and staring at a HUGE child care bill, that will likely change.

I will work on getting some pictures up when I get home tonight.

Only reason I avoided Nikon was because our pro photogs here at work constantly bitch about nikons slow, and unfriendly repair service.  I really wanted to go Nikon, ever since I was shooting film in the 9th grade wayyyyy back in the '70's.  But now that I am in an electronics age, and I'm an electronics tech by trade, I had to go with a better reputation on the service end.  I bought a Canon XTi.
