Looking for a new digital camera. Can do up to $1000 if needed. I have been looking around and there are alot fo options out there, need some suggestions. I like the smaller cameras due to thier size and they would be easy to carry, just put in a pockett and go. I also like the lager Canon and Nikon SLR digital cams, look like the would take some great pics. |

I'd suggest the DRebXT, as well, though I'd go with the kit package from B&H. This package has the new 17-85mm EF-S lens with IS for $1169.95 (and a $100 Canon rebate). While this package has the standard 18-55 kit lens for under $800 with the same rebate available. I got about $500 in rebates in the last Canon promotions. |

The Canon A-80 has a nice LCD display (better than many others), but I think that model has probably been superceded by even better units. Be sure to evaluate the kind of memory being used, and to match the image quality and features to what you're going to use it for. You may not need to spend the entire $1K. But be sure to get one with good enough resolution. |
| If you want to go with a DSLR, you can find used 20Ds on places like the Buy/Sell Forum at www.fredmiranda.com for ~$800 body only. |
Or for that matter, any Nikon camera.
Most all cameras will take good quality images. It's the photographer that makes the picture |

I shot Nikon, but I think you will be happy with either Nikon or Cannon My only advice would be to buy it from an authorized retailer so that you get the full warranty. If you purchase a grey market item, not only is there no warranty, Nikon will NOT work on it. Read: You can not pay Nikon to work on a piece of Nikon Equipment that is grey market. I am not sure how cannon treats grey market. I have a D200 and love it. Stepped up from a D70s only because I wanted a faster frame rate. |

Just to muddy the waters here, Sony have just announced their first DSLR, based on the Konica-Minolta 5D DSLR (KM sold their camera division to Sony earlier this year but had already been working with Sony since last year). Most existing KM Maxxum/Dynax SLR lenses will fit the Sony body. No full reviews just yet but there are some previews available. www.letsgodigital.org/en/news/articles/story_8382.html www.letsgodigital.org/en/news/articles/story_8396.html www.dpreview.com/news/0606/06060501sonydslra100.asp |
If you are a casual shooter, consider the Canon S2is or S3is. Lots of tools for the money (32-432 lens built in), and in one package. If you are really really serious, consider the Rebel on a budget, but the plastic looks so cheap especially in silver. For a little more get a more featured Canon or Nikon. M4-AK |
| At the $1000 range I suggest either the Rebel XT or a Nikon D50 or D70s. Only way you're going to be able to determine which one is to go to a camera store that has all 3 in stock and test them out. Image quality is close enough that arguing about it would be a moot point. The thing that will probably settle it for you is how well you get along with the camera. I personally prefer Nikon's control layout and ergonomics but that's a purely subjective matter. Don't make a decision without trying the cameras personally. |
| Actually the D70 does more than the D50. I wish the Canon XT came out back in 04 when I got my D70. I would had go tthe XT. Getting Nikon gear locally here sucks since the nearest Nikon dealers are 40 miles away and are staffed by brain dead morons. The Nikon IS a very good camera, but their store base sucks. |
