I have a video (AVI if it matters) that I need to edit down to the nitty gritty. What software can I get (for free) to do this with, please? I've got photoshop software already, FWIW.

Please be BASIC in the suggestions as I'm a novice dumbass with editing software.................

If you're just looking for a one-time use, there are 30 day trials to Adobe's products. In this case you could download and try the trial of Premiere Pro or Premiere Elements.

If you're looking for something to keep/use on a regular basis (beyond trial period) Premiere Elements isn't too expensive, but it's nothing close to free.

Try Windows Movie Maker.  It's very basic and it might already be installed on your computer.

Your camera didn't come with editing software?

Not sure if it has video editing. As I said, I'm new to all this software editing stuff. Guns & cars *I* know; software, not so much.

What is wrong with Photoshop? I'm looking at buying Elements 10 for Mac for basic editing needs. Not sure of a better program is needed.

Just curious, Windows XP or 7?

I tried Win7 version and it was way different from the XP version, which I have used alot.
