So, I've had the same camera for 6 years and it's gotten pretty beaten up it really doesn't take pics all that well.

I was looking to spend up to say 300 maybe a bit more, doesn't really matter....What suggestions in that price range, SLR? What is SLR, does that just mean digital with a lense? I don't need to the best I just want to take good pics that I can easily transfer to my computer or wherever. Whatcha got?

Your right. SLR=single lens reflex, or, digital with interchangable lens for all intents and purposes. Don't bother with it. Go find a point and shoot you like, Canon and Nikon are great places to start.

Well, I have one of the old 5 mega pixel Nikon S1's from like 5 or 6 years ago....I wanted something with better quality.

You'd be surprised at how far the "point-n-shoot" cameras have come in the last few years.

If you're not interested in acquiring a collection of lenses, I would skip the dSLR - and they are pretty much out of your price range. A basic dSLR will run you around $600 and lenses at least $300 and up.

Since I'm a Canon guy, if you want:

Portability: PowerShot S95
More Advanced Features: PowerShot G12
Ultrazoom: PowerShot SX30 IS

All of these will still stretch your budget a bit, but like the above poster mentioned, you'd be surprised at how far point & shoots have come.

When, where and what do you use a camera for?

$300 means your looking at point and shoots, and there is a wide variety of them out there.

Great thanks I will look into them.

Someone asked, what the nature of my photo shooting is....I take pictures outside in the sun, in the woods, in the car, inside.....I'm no artist, but I take a lot of pics and I hate when they come out grainy or looking like crap.
