I want to get a camera setup for taking some misc. pics but also something that I can use to take pics at trap shoots this year. Ideally something that could clearly capture breaking birds. Any recommendations?

go to your local camera store. test out the 7d and the nikon d300s. Either one will serve you very well. Pick up the appropriate 70-200 lens.

I owned the 7D and it was an excellent body. There was a definite feel of quality to it. I did have some (lots) of problems getting sharp picture from low end glass, but I've seen good and great results with the 70-200mm f/4 L. Plus there's that 8fps burst...

if you're shooting into the sky, i'd recommend shooting at f8 or higher. you may not end up with the smallest depth of field but you'll definitely come out with some sharp photos.
