I have a Nikon D3000 with the kit lens that comes with it. I am looking at getting this lens, I know that I will have to manually focus it. Anybody here use this lens or similar? Is it a must have lens? I want to get more serious into photography. I know my sis in law already wants me to do my nieces 6 months pics.

I have this lens, and LOVE IT! I've played around a bit with it, and it does take some nice shots... I recommend it!

Is there a reason you are looking specifically at that lens?
Another option would be the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX

It's a decent lens.  Small, light-weight, fast, auto-focus will work on the D3000, and produces nice images.  (A bit more expensive than the 50 f/1/8D, but IMHO worth the extra cash as it will auto-focus.)
Plenty of people on DPReview have discussed this lens and it's images if you haven't already checked it out.

I don't have the one you linked - I do have the 50 1/4G.  That and the 35 DX are nice.  I have heard many people say they love the 50 1.8D (as the post above).

I would go with the 35/1.8 as mentioned above. I bought a 50/1.8 for my first camera before they released the 35/1.8. Not having the autofocus is a bit of a pain on the entry level bodies since the viewfinders aren't the greatest.

I was looking at that lens because of the price. I have never heard of DPReview. Will check it out thanks!

DPR also has a review of the lens in addition to all of the user chat in the forums.

If you plan on taking pictures of things that hold still, then that would be a good lens.  If you want it because 50mm's are a "fast" lens, then I would probably hold out for an auto focus.

I had one for a while on my D40.  A real manual lens is a lot easier.  The AF lens is loose and undampened, which is fine for AF but sucks for manual focus.  I'd prefer a 50mm f/2 or f/1.8 AiS even though they won't meter.

The 35mm (already suggested) is an excellent choice for DX cameras.  If your heart is set on a 50mm, get the new AFS version so that it will auto-focus on your D3000.
