Just saw this article in the IEEE Spectrum journal and thought it might be of interest to some here; I haven't tried the software and don't have a recent enough Canon (PowerShot) anyway.  It allows running "scripts" that can among other things set up timed interval shots and motion detection.

FYA.  I may even take a look at one of these cameras to try this.

CHDK is great... I have used it with an A720IS to take timelapse photos. A friend of mine has used it to take lightning photos...

SDK* are not new to the Canon PowerShot family of cameras.

We had a customer develop a system that used several Powershot Pro1's to take pictures of cars for auction.  It was pretty cool...car drove in a lighted shooting room... stopped on a pressure pad that activated the system that would measure the car via sonar...this would in turn set the program in motion for the cameras to position themselves via motorized arms, zoom as needed and begin taking close to 80 shots of the car.  All these shots were so the car could go to an online auction site.  It was a sweet set up but by the time the system was debugged Canon discontinued the camera.

These hacks look pretty cool though.
