Hi All!
I got a PS3 for Christmas and am just now playing around with the media server function. It works great for photo viewing and for playing music. However, I am having some problems when it comes to watching videos. When I try to play a video, it usually plays for 10 to 15 minutes, then the PS3 and my PC are disconnected from the wireless network. I am also experiencing choppy playback of the videos. I am running Windows Media Player 11 as my server and my wireless router is running at it's max speed of 54mbps. The PS3 and PC are in the same room, but the router is not. I also tried using SimpleCenter software for the media server and had the same problem. Has anyone heard of this problem or know the cause or a fix? Do I need to upgrade to a faster router or switched to a wired connection? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jeff |

Sounds to me like it's either the software or the wireless, though less likely the software since two different programs have the same problem.
It could be your wireless connection just isn't moving data fast enough for the size of the video you're trying to stream. Try either downloading it to the PS3's drive and then watching it from there, or hooking the PS3 up via the wired gigabit/1000mbps connection. I've streamed multigig HD videos to the PS3 over the wired connection without issue. |

Wired would probably solve it. I had tons of problems with the wireless connection between my PS3 and my old Router, wire fixed it. Then that router took a shit, new router works flawless over wireless.
Is the router firmware upto date? You could try screwing around with the port settings that may of been the problem on my old one, I had to constantly fiddle with them for u torrent and other programs, which probably screwed up my ps3 connection. If you go with a new router I recommend Trendnet n band, has worked great for me, never had to screw around with any settings other then enabling security it worked perfect out of the box unlike my old linksys. |

Thanks for the quick replies and the advice. Just a few followup questions:
Frost7, how do I get the movie onto the PS3 HDD? I tried copying it to a thumbdrive, but that didn't work. While the it recognizes the thumbdrive, it doesn't see any files on it. XD_Fan, is everything on your network wired into the router or just the PS3? I am about to go try this right now (wiring just the PS3). F4Squid, I am also running a TrendNet router, although it's a G band, not N. I'm certainly not tech savvy enough to mess with port settings and considered myself lucky to setup the network security. Right now it looks like it's going to be a wired network until I upgrade my router. Thanks again for all the help. Jeff |

When you have it selected via the MediaServer, instead of hitting X to start the vid like you usually would, hit triangle. It'll bring up a menu. One of the options is "copy." Hit that, and the PS3 will pull the video off the media server and copy it to its HDD. (This is assuming your media server allows this kind of copying, which it should. Never used any of the software you're using so I can't say wit 100% certainty.) Also, the reason you can't see it on the flash drive is because it looks for specific directories. There two ways around that. The easy way: 1. Make a folder called "PS3" on your flash drive, in the main directory. 2. Make a folder called "VIDEO" inside that. 3. Drop the videos you want to move in there. The easier way: 1. Plug in your flash drive 2. Select it with the PS3, then hit triangle 3. Select "Display All" on the menu that pops up and you can see all of the contents of the drive |

Jeff Theirs a chance upgrading the firmware may help too, if they have a new version out. But you should be aware that if you upgrade it the router will be reset to factory default settings you'll have to redo the security. If the router and PS3 positions aren't inconvenient to running wire it's the surest way to fix the problem. |

We have a fairly new N type router and just couldn't get 100% reliability on video. Plugged the PS/3 into the router and it works like a champ. |

Well it looks like I have several options to choose from. Wiring the PS3, but not the PC, has solved the disconnect problem, but not the choppy video/audio problem. I'm sure that will clear up if I wire the PC as well. They are just not conveniently located to do that right now.
Thanks to Frost7 I have successfully copied movies to my PS3 HDD and got it to play movies from a thumb drive. This looks like my best option right now and I am happy to stick with it. Now if I could just solve the "Unrecognizable Format" bug I'll be straight. Again, thanks for all of your help. Jeff |
