There seems to be a bit of a trend emerging with PS3 after the latest update. There are many people, myself included, whose disk players don't work properly after this last software update.
All of a sudden, my PS3 won't recognize or play back ANY disks at all, neither Bluray nor DVD. I just did the latest update and now it won't play anything. The machine is operating properly in all other respects but the disk playback is totally dead. It's almost as if the drive died. How long is the warranty? Mine is less than a year old. When I get it up and running again, I am going to turn off the auto update feature. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. |

Thank you. I will have to act quickly, it is my only bluray player and I think mine is about 10-11 months old. Are disk drive failures common? Anyone here having trouble with their drive? ANyone have trouble after updating? I heard one of the updates a few months back bricked some peoples, never had any problems with mine, drive failures do occasionally happen with the system, not a high rate like the 360 though, probably something like 3%. Had mine for over a year and been trouble free so far. |

I think I'll use this as an excuse to buy a dedicated Bluray player. I can ship the PS3 off for repairs, taking God knows how long, and use the player in the interim. Takes about 2 weeks I think. I got myself a standalone BD player around blackfriday Sony 350 for around $200 shipped. I use netflix so I watch alot of blurays and didn't want to be wearing out the PS3 drive, and now I can watch BD's on either of my TV's. The 350 is a pretty good player upscales dvd's just as good as the PS3 and BD-Live compatible firmware is easily upgradable. |

Are there any troubleshooting steps I can take before I hassle returning the unit? There is nothing in the manual or in the menus on troubleshooting this particular problem.
In a PC you can go to the Device manager and play around. I see no equivalent functionality in the PS3 menu. |

You fill out some paperwork, they send you a box, the tape, a prepaid shipping label - everything. You ship it to them overnight on their dime and they ship you a new PS3. You must have the original receipt, though. |
| I had my drive to fail. I took it back to Wal-Mart and got another one. I had the extended warranty, well worth the money that is for sure. Gave me a new unit and $100 bucks because the price had went down. This seem to be a common issue now. I don't believe it is software related, I think that the drives are going out. Mine had been working fine and the update wasn't recent. So I can't see it being software. |

I bought it at Toys-R-Us. <rant mode on> This batch of home theater electronics I bought is far and away THE WORST set of electronics I have ever had. I have had more trouble with these things than all other electronics I've ever had - COMBINED! The HDMI interface sucks! HDMI cable connectors SUCK! SONY STR-DA5300ES AV receiver SUCKS! Samsung DTB-H560F tuner SUCKS! My SONY PS3 has died twice - it SUCKS! <rant mode off> |
