I'm trying to get into it, but it seems like it's a radical departure from previous versions, especially with the religions.  Anyone have any tips?

I've yet to finish a game
maybe I'll have to break down and not use the largest map
but even on my fairly powerful system by the time I get to the modern age it's crawling and taking 5+ minutes to do stuff between turns

I've gone back to Civ3 with the very very excellent Rise and Rule (RAR) mod

Even playing Civ3 I use the small map because I don't want to bake cookies or something between each round to pass the time.

Is it just me or did they make wars practically impossible to win in this version?

I dunno, I hate wars so I'm happy to see the all-peace option.

I played it for about a month and then got bored.  They changed so much, plus dropped so many units; no more tactical nukes (and they hard-coded the ICBM dropping as part of the nuke animation so no one could mod them in), which was really annoying since nuking everyone into submission was my SOP for victory.

I never got into the Civ. series until this one.  Unfortunately, I keep hearing the old veterans saying  how this one sucks compared to past versions  Is this true?

I think CIV II was the best version. At least I had the most fun playing that one. YMMV. I like Alpha Centauri even better though. Supernukes!

I had a bootleg that my brother scrounged of Civ III, which I enjoyed far more than a friend's copy of Civ II. Too bad the bootleg doesn't want to work anymore...

Just might have to go buy IV and check it out for myself.

I always played the "War Monger" in CivIII.

Been looking at picking up Civ4 but have not broken down to get it yet.

If you buy it, make sure to build 10 times the number of units you think you will need. I got real tired of an archer destroying my entire army.
