I have been thinking about getting a console. I'm kind of leaning towards a PS4 over the Xbox one. I plan on streaming and gaming online. Which one would be best?

Nerdy specifics aside, it all comes down to what exclusive games you want.

For example: want to play the new Halo games? You'll need the Xbox. Want to play Final Fantasy games? You'll need the Playstation.

If you don't care about the exclusives, xbox live still has subscription costs.

For online gaming, I'd go Xbox.  Xbox Live is simply outstanding, and worth every penny, IMHO.  They just announced backward compatibility with the best Xbox 360 titles, too.  The Xbox One also interfaces with your cable or satellite box and will now be able to act as a DVR, too.  I'm not sure, but if it does that on the cloud, you won't lose shows when you get a new tv box or Xbox.

Xbox live on the 360 was perfect.

Leave it to microsoft to fuck up a good thing.

Xbox live on xbone may still be better than playstation version though.

Xbone really is a contorted fucked up mess when it comes to menus and xbox live connectivity and chat.  360 HUD is light years better.

This is a big one.

Anyway after using the xbox one with the hdmi passthrough for my cable I don't want to go to anything else. It is so nice to be bored and watching tv and have the notification pop up that someone wants to play a game. I played titanfall for instance with a bunch of guys from the other side of the US. Someone would decided to start a game and just invite a bunch of people to see who would hop in. If I was on the PS4 I would either have to leave it on and check from time to time or be using it to watch something like netflix. The integration is what does it for me.

This is not to say you don't have some issues. In theory the xbox ones channel guide is awesome as you can see whats on cable, youtube, amazon, hulu, etc in one place. They expect you to use voice commands or the controller though. The official remote doesn't have a number pad on it(hell if they just let it use the old 360/media center remotes this wouldn't matter).

Xbox One.

I just started to get back into online gaming. Been away for about 3 years and all the folks I was gaming with doesn't play anymore so i dont have any online friends that play anymore. The Xbox one was my first choice. I have always been a pc gamer but I like  the option of streaming through the console to watch movies and all that.

Various xbox one bundles/discounts are available currently, not so for the PS4.

So will the xbox one app. It isn't the same though. With the xbox one I can see that someone at least has their system on and chances are is around their tv.

Being able to see a friend is watching tv and being able to say "Hey lets continue our minecraft game" or "BF4?" is really nice. Same with you sitting there watching tv(or netflix, amazon, hulu, youtube, whatever) and getting an invite since you are there(vs random messages to your phone when you may not even be home).

Hell when I play my wii u I generally use the controllers screen. I'll have the tv on in the background through the xbox. Mind you I don't play that console much.

The xbox's integration is just better. Mind you if your friends are on the PS4 or you don't have cable it isn't as big of a deal. The xbox does have an over the air usb tuner you can get for it now though(I'm not sure if it is out yet in the US or not but if not it is coming).

Edit:. One thing I do really like about the ps4 is that you can upgrade the internal hard drive officially. The xbox one you can't. It supports external drives though so I just threw a 2tb usb 3 drive on. Has sony opened up the PS4 to allow usb hard drives to store games yet?

I cut the cable a long back.  Honestly i feel like the whole run your cable through the xbone is a step that would have been great for last the last generation, I don't see Cable sticking around forever in it's current form forever.

My ps4 is hands down faster than my Xbone.  When I say faster, I mean with everything.  It's just the way it is.  I've had several games that I had on both systems for one reason or another, the ps4 would do circles around the xbone.

If I didn't have any one in particular to play with, I would get a ps4.  The only way I would go back and buy an Xbone would be if that's what everyone I knew was playing on it.

I've had tons of issues with the always on feature on my xbone.  Stuff just doesn't work right when I leave it on.  I hate having to do the updates but I also hate having to go in and physically close out netflix whenever I turn it on just to get it to work.  Sometimes it won't register my controller until I do a hard shut down.  It's just silly.  It started out like that and i finally started actually shutting it down, but recently i switched it back to always on so i wouldn't have a ton of updates all the time, and it's back to the same old song and dance.

Also it's just weird stuff.  Like sometimes my game just won't play any sound, and I have to go back to the homescreen and select the icon that shows the disc in it, because the one "quick/recent" one without the disc will not play sound.

Also, I like PS4s OS 100% better than xbones.  It just works better for me.

IMO, the PS4.  It's got a much larger percentage of the worldwide market share vs the xbox (it's something like 25 million PS4s sold vs 12 million X1s), meaning that it is turning into the lead development platform for most 3rd party devs.  Long term, that means more exclusives and better game ports.

Or just build a PC like a boss.

I wasn't a fan of the MS ideas of what the xbox was going to be, but it's not really fair to use that as a strike against it anymore.  It no longer requires (or even comes with) the kinect, and it no longer needs to phone home.  It's really no more of a "spy machine" than the PS4 is for Sony.

It tends to be a lot more stable.  Though the X1 doesn't have quite the same level of stability as the 360 had.

Not by much.  I wish I had a chart of the downtime for both for the past year, just to see.  I would say there's barely a difference if any.

You had an XBOX but it appears you didn't use the TV-box interface bit.

You don't run "cable" to the XBOX.  You run the video signal from whatever TV service you use to the XBOX.  The XB1 will then act as controller to the box (cable, directtv, dish, uverse, etc) as well as provide an extra interface overlay on top of the TV video signal.  Think TIVO.  Think Google TV.  Think Windows Media Center with CableCARD tuner.

As for everything else - I leave my XB1 on constantly and experience none of the problems.  One anecdotal sample to another.

By cable, I meant your cable service not an actual cable line.  I should have been more specific. I stick by what I said though, I think cable/satellite in it's current form will die out.  The A La carte style of watching TV is going to keep gaining in popularity.  Hence why I feel like it would have been good last gen and not so much this gen.  I understand where their heads were at, but it doesn't seem very forward thinking or next gen to me.

I may have a defective Xbone, but as long as I don't use the always on feature everything works flawlessly.

I'm not the only one with the sound thing. While i've figured out how to fix it pretty easily (pop back to the home screen and actually select the tab with the disc icon) it's something that I shouldn't have to do.  I shouldn't be shooting titans in the face, and have all my sound drop completely out. If you could pause play and go fix it that would be one thing, but you can't really pause most of today's games.

Some of my others issues could be attributed to the Apps themselves, I found several threads about the netflix issues as well.

Found this article on the install times.  While I never timed mine, these findings are roughly what I experienced as well.
http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/11/28/game-install-times-on-xbox-one-ps4-compared/

Here's a pretty in depth comparison that is recent, again these are just opinions though so take them with a grain of salt.

Also, my experience isn't because I "had" an xbox, it's because I "have" an xbox.  I didn't kick it to the curb.  This is Arfcom, the answer is always get both.  But if you can only get one, right now the PS4 is on top (for me.)

I own both systems, but much prefer the Xbox One. If you were going to get one console - the Xbox just offers so much more than the PS4 does in functionality. I highly encourage you to get the Kinect, too - as it's really an awesome addition to the whole experience. I wasn't big on the idea of the kinect until I bought the Xbox One and got used to using it. it's really slick.
