It has come to my attention that with the great fun in GTA Online with the ARFCOM crew, I may need to get a headset.  It seems like some other folks in the thread have the same issue, so rather than clutter the GTA Online thread I figured I'd start a new one.

I've never had a mic / headset for the PS3 but I know I don't want one of the bluetooth phone looking things.  I have a difficult time clearly hearing and understanding people's voices over my surround sound system.  So I think I'd like a wireless headset that will have the audio and everything through them.

So who has some recommendations?  Are Turtle Beaches good?  Cheaper alternatives?  Do any of these have a push-to-talk feature?  I really despise all the background noise I hear from most people from kids screaming to munching on food.

These were linked in teh GTA Online thread, but I'm not sure I want to spend $80

Grab some sennheisers. Im against wireless for any device that acts as input/output. Its up to you but, wireless = another thing to fail mid game when it matters the most.

Mine

Mic is jacked up, gotta rest it on my lip and sound like the guy  from Hey Arnold!

And ear pad piece is from a dif headset.
The tape is to keep it all together or else it all falls apart.

All bc many drunk dork gamer nights! And forgetting the headset is on while running to the pisser before the game loads again,

To explain everything you need to know about gaming headsets would take a few pages so I'll try to make it short.

#1 Do not I repeat do not cheap out on gaming headsets you'll end up being the dousche bag of the group that has a shitload of feedback and sounds like he's on comm's in a tin building and everyone will end up muting you anyway.

#2 if your going to be gaming with a headset you won't be able to use surround sound anyway because your party members will be able to hear your speakers especially on cheaper headsets and you'll be muted or ignored.

#3 decide wether you want to hear dull regular sounds or full surround sound quality (aka hearing the enemies balls slap together from across the map)

After you've taken these common factors into account you haft to choose which brand works for you I've personally owned:

Logitech G930 wireless - nice fit and finish but they randomly disconnect when in use even when there plugged in.
PDP Metal Gear solid Bluetooth headset - mute function never worked and it would randomly fall out of my ear.
Turtle beach Earforce Charlie 5.1 wired - good headset but the cord got somewhat annoying and it felt cheap for 80 bucks.
Turtle beach x41's 7.1 wireless - good quality headset but doesn't deliver he full 7.1 sound in its wireless form the cheaper 5.1 wired sounded exactly the same and the constant battery changes are more annoying then a cord would ever be.

So far I've liked the turtle beach headsets but I don't care for the fit and finish of them especially after I was able to handle and use some tritons for the same price the turtle beaches feel flimsy and are very brittle my 150 dollar x 41s almost broke after one small drop from a desk onto carpet and they still don't function the same as they did before.

I always wondered why professional gamers use tritons exclusively but now I know they also fit adult heads better then the turtles which is useful if your going to wear them for long periods of time. I'll be switching to them exclusively when the next gen console comes out.

As for you choices if you plan on going next gen or have multiple handing platforms I would recommend the triton 720+ They work on PC , ps3, x360
Other than that take these factors into mind and you'll be golden.

We (some friends and I) managed to snag 4 Turtle Beach ZSevens at PAX. Man I am in love...

Of course prior to this I had never dropped more then about $50 on a head set.

I got a GX gaming bundle when I built my PC.  Seemed to be the quickest way to get things together.  For my style of play it seems to be "just enough".  I've got a programmable 5 button Mouse and Keyboard with Macro buttons.  Haven't found a use for them yet, but they're there.  The head set works pretty well, although it does get uncomfortable on longer playing sessions.

I have the turtle beach x11 I think they are called. Cost bout 40ish.

Working great so far, makes a lot of the sound better. Easiet to hear footsteps and your prey reloading for example.

Plus my wife doesn't have to hear the hookers scream when I knife em

Damn....for that price they better blow me too.

I'm in the sub-$100 range right now I think.  This is strictly for the PS3 and I don't want to spend a ton of money if I'm not sure this is going to be a long term thing.  I really see myself using these for GTA Online and that's about it.  I've never had a desire to use a headset or play any other PS3 game online.  I have a PC for that with a Vent server and buddies I hop on with.

On that note, could I use a PC USB headset on the PS3?  Should work fine, right?

I use mine for everything... I also use them for watching movies when nobody is home or the wife is trying to sleep.  I get the most amazing 7.1 surround sound as loud as I want without disturbing anyone else.

Gaming with them you can literally hear people walking up behind you.  They are amazing, but then again they should be for their cost.

I'm not sure if the PS3 sends audio out of the USB ports.  It does use the Optical port on the back and the HDMI output.

I've got the Sony wireless headset and I'm pretty satisfied with it. It's usually around $70. The only thing is that the wireless receiver should be put on a usb extension cord if you're using Wifi on your PS3 or there will probably be connection problems.

I have these I just got them and have used them for a while.  I like the sound but I do not like how they feel when I try and take one ear off and try and rest on my cheek or whatever.  I do this often with my wife and daughter in the house or just OPSEC reasons, I like to be able to her what is going on in my house.

They are a PC set and I do not know if they work for any game systems so I guess buy beware.  My fit issues are probably due to my bigass head and I really am not a fan of the fit.  I am actually seriously considering trying to take them back to BB on their warranty deal I always buy from them.

Astro A40s or A50s are honestly a little overkill for what you're wanting to do, IMO.  They're great headsets, don't get me wrong, the sound quality is second to none.  But unless you're an avid audiophile or COD junkie soundwhoring people with ninja/dead silence/sitrep, they're probably a bit much for what you pay and what you'll get out of them.

The Sony wireless headset isn't bad for what it is, they're about $70-90 depending on where you shop.  Turtle Beach PX3s are probably what I would go with for wireless on a budget, just be prepared to swap batteries out a lot.  The X12s and P11 Turtle Beaches are wired and aren't bad headsets, they're both less than $100.  For something a little more spiffy, I think you can pick up Tritton AX720s for a little over $100 on Amazon or Gamestop.  Above $150 or so, you have to shop a little more carefully, but below that and for what you're wanting to do, damn near any headset will do fine to be honest.  I have most of my hands on experience with Turtle Beach and Astro, and they're both solid products.  Some of the guys I play with have had some problems with their newer Astro headsets, mine I bought from an Arfcommer and he had to have them fixed once when he owned them, but the Turtle Beach headsets I've owned were pretty good.

I've been using a Logitech G35 on my computer for a few years now. No real issues using these while wearing glasses and it does keep out some of the fan noise from my PC. No complaints from other people about mic quality. 5.1 sound seems to be a gimmick but they work well in stereo mode. My only real complaint is, the covering over the headphone padding started to fall apart after a little over a year of use and Logitech doesn't sell replacement pads. They did however cover that wear under the warranty and sent me a new set free of charge. They even covered the return shipping, which is nice. The bad part was I was with out a headset for 3 weeks(1 week shipping to CA, 1 week processing the RMA, and a week shipping back to VA, ymmv)

Right here.

930 Logis are the best headset you can buy without entering the $250+ range.

And most of the 250+ headsets are no better for games anyway esp if that game doesn't capitalize on surround sound.

Ok this post had me thinking I could connect my MS Life Chat headset I have for the PC to my PS3 and play.  I must be a real jack ass or something, because I can NOT get it to work.  What am I doing wrong here?  I have it plugged in, set it up in the accessory settings menu, and I get no sound.  When I am in the accessory settings menu to adjust the mic level I can hear myself in the head set but I have no sound outside of that menu.  What gives?

I know in game sometimes you have to change setting to get audio to headphones, like team speak or other stuff.  If I remember I had to do that while playing the first Resistance game, I think, don't hold me to it.

I have a pair of Corsairs that were on sale.  Not a bad set and they fit my head and ears great, but I think I'll go with logitech next time.  The Corsairs developed an intermittent popping noise that is somehow connected to the mic switch, whether it's on or off.  Flipping the switch back and forth takes care of it for a while but it's still annoying.

I don't know how well USB headsets work on PS3s. I am sure PS4s and XB1s will have USB headset support natively, but I think USB connectivity for headsets is primarily a PC thing. I could be wrong.

I've had a set of Logitech G35s for almost 5 years now.  Used them pretty much every day.  Theyr'e on the way out now due to heavy use.  The vinyl stuff is all flaking off, the mic won't stow in the up position and the left earcup just kindof swivels without retaining in position anymore.  That said, they still actually work great.  I'd happily replace them with a set of G930s...but I might just save for a pair of Astro A50s instead.  In the meantime I will probably replace the earcups so they stop shedding all over my face.  Apparently the Tritton AX Pro earcups fit.  Logitech does not make replacements.

Ya.  I've had nothing but bad experiences from TB and nothing but good from Astro.

Don't get me wrong, the Astros are probably not even close to fairly valued, but they stay in business so market dictates price.

I liked the Tritons we use when focus testing too, but they are very heavy compared to almost any other brand.

Buy audiophile headphones (im using JVC HARX700) which offer much better sound quality then the majority of gaming branded headsets sound quality and add an Antlion modmic and you will have a superior setup forunder $70.

Astro is hit or miss.  I've heard loving customer service stories and horror stories as well.

Aside from Boomslang's hyperbole, I've never really heard gamers complaining about sound quality or comfort either.

I've listened to a fair amount of audiophile quality headphones.  For guys like Boom who can hear a difference, it must suck.  I mean that.  I've lost more than a few frequencies in my hearing over the years from guns and motorcycles.  I hit the law of diminishing returns quickly.

Ps4 and xbox voice chat are fairly low quality.  The Astros actually shine the most on PC with something like mumble.  I can hear that difference fine.

This thread is relevant to my interests. I'm building a gaming chamber in my library, and I'd like to get a full surround wireless headset for the PS4 when it hits my shelf. Bluetoof ring-through would be a plus also. I don't mind spending money, but the wireless is non-negotiable.

Thoughts?

Damn....for that price they better blow me too.

I'm in the sub-$100 range right now I think.  This is strictly for the PS3 and I don't want to spend a ton of money if I'm not sure this is going to be a long term thing.  I really see myself using these for GTA Online and that's about it.  I've never had a desire to use a headset or play any other PS3 game online.  I have a PC for that with a Vent server and buddies I hop on with.

On that note, could I use a PC USB headset on the PS3?  Should work fine, right?

In your price range, this will be your best bet. They actually do very well compared to some double the price. Many actually find the virtual surrouns sound to be much better than the headsets with multiple speakers in each side. I tend to agree. The best IMHO though i to have actual speakers spaced out around the room.

I really like the Pulse and Pulse Elites, which I primarily use with my Playstation. Not only do they make gaming better, but I prefer watching movies while wearing them over a traditional surround sound setup. I originally purchased the regular pulse headset and was very happy with it, other than the size I really have no complaints and for the price I would compare them favorable to headsets costing much more. The Elites have a few features that I like but if I was on a budget I would not hesitate to get the regular Pulse headset.

I just got a Turtle Beach P11 for ps3. Trying to get it set up so that when I plug in headset tv sound  cuts out and only get sound thru headset. And then vice versa, unplug headset, sound automatically comes out of tv. Is this possible or am I a dumbass?

ETA - I guess I figured out the only way to do it. Pretty much have to set it to come through both and just turn the TV volume all the way down if I'm using the headset. Wish it could be as simple as normal headphones - plug into headphone jack, TV speakers cut out. Oh well.

returned my Razer Kraken pro and got these instead:

Corsair 1400 analog

Love them, the USB is too risky from what I've read, USB headsets seem to be hit or miss and it depends on your motherboard.  I tried one and it wasn't getting grounded properly, the suggestions were always to plug the USB into a wall outlet (like your USB charger for your phone) but even with that I still heard a small amount of static.  So I'm sticking with analog plug only headsets.

BTW, I highly recommend these 1400 corsair headphones.  The foam around the ears feels great, and the top is nicely padded, have worn them for hours with no discomfort, the Kraken and another Razer headset I tried bothered me after about 30 minutes of wear.

I use a set of Turtle Beach XP500s that I caught on a WOOT deal for $125.

they kick ass - but word to the wise, invest in some rechargable AAs.

I have been using Sanyo Eneloop AAs with great success. saved a lot of money with those.

I just ordered the Kraken Pros. They were so cheap on Woot I couldn't pass them up. From the reviews, most people have said that comfort was one of the headset's strong points, so I hope I don't end up disappointed like you were. We'll see.

I have a set of the Turtle Beach X41s. They worked great for the 360. I got them to to work for the xbox one too but you have to modify the chat cable .

I have the Razer tiamat 7.1's. Bass response is unreal, though for $300 it better be :)
