[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Fallout 3, round 2 (Page 1 of 5)

The big Fallout 3 thread seems to have slipped into the archives, so I had to start a new thread to answer a few questions.
Thinking of playing Fallout 3 again, last time I ended with karma maxed out. Question for those who have played through as both good and evil characters; is there really a noticable difference either way? Is it worth playing as a bad guy this time? Are there any good mods (PC) I should download? In particular any weapons mods? I'd like more weapons, particularly weapons from the original Fallout games. Finally, if I blow up Megaton, can I still complete the wasteland survival guide quest later? |

There are some characters that won't talk to you if you're too good or evil (depending on who they are), including some NPCs that can join you. There are a few quests that you can or can't do, depending on who you are.
The biggest differences are blowing up Megaton or not, which causes some different options to be available as well as some dialogue stuff, as well as the ending montage/narration being different based on some choices you make. I played through once as a Good Guy, helping everyone out and being a hero. Then I played as a total bastard villainous type, selling people into slavery, killing wantonly etc. The approach was different enough that I found it fun to play through again, so I say go for it. If you're playing as a bad guy, you can use the Mesmetron that the Paradise Falls slavers give you to hypnotize people into giving you all their stuff (as long as you don't accidentally make their heads explode). Pretty handy! |

If you blow up Megaton, you'll occasionally run into some survivors, which proceed to beat the crap out of you... I have played as a good and evil character. My internal barometer has always kept me from blowing up megaton. I really hope they keep with the same theme in New Vegas. It is a great game because of all the facets, especially the moral choices you have to make. |
|
The dialogue options you pick and some of your actions make it a different experience depending on what karma you're going for. I think it's definitely worth playing through for a second (or third or fourth or fifth) time. As far as mods, check the Fallout 3 Nexus. There are a lot of fun mods, depending on how crazy you want to get. I recommend Marts Mutant Mod. Adds some cool options, including increased increased spawns. BUT... it makes the game tough. I've run into patrols of 20 talon mercs, a dozen enclave, etc. The extra challenge does make it fun if you're playing with mod weapons and extra followers though. Enclave commander is also a cool mod and it allows you to call in vertibird airstrikes or support troops. Look at the Nexus and check out some of the top ranked mods and go from there. But, make sure you get Fallout Mod Manager as it makes things much easier. |

And even if you admit to it, she is nice to you and says something like "Well, if you're sorry and you promise to never, ever do it again"

I do believe that the Survival Guide Quest is a no-go if you KB Megaton. I've never tried... but I think Moira runs off to Underworld once she's ghoulified, I'm not sure. I've only played that route once. I never saw a good reason to completely obliterate a vendor, but YMMV. Good vs. Evil doesn't significantly change the main story of the game, really at all. However, it DOES prevent you from getting certain followers like RL-3, as well as making it MUCH easier to complete certain quests (IE, walking into Paradise Falls if you have bad Karma, instead of the mission required). Some good mods to look into is FOOK2 (Fallout Overhaul Kit), Marts Mutant Mod, Fellout, and some of the weapons mods you can just browse through, but FOOK has a TON of them in there already. |

I completed the Survival Guide before nuking Megaton, so you don't have to lose that quest if you don't want to. And there's plenty of other vendors, there's nothing at Moira's that you can't get elsewhere. Also, you get an apartment at TenPenny Towers that you can't get otherwise (to replace the one you would have got in Megaton if you defuse the bomb instead. However, it DOES prevent you from getting certain followers like RL-3, as well as making it MUCH easier to complete certain quests (IE, walking into Paradise Falls if you have bad Karma, instead of the mission required). True, but you get access to other followers who won't talk to you if you aren't Bad enough. Basically, opting for one side of the Karma angle doesn't rule out anything that isn't replaced by something else, so you really can't screw yourself over no matter which path you choose. |

I hope you sprung for the game of the year edition. No. I'm cheap. Got the original for $15 damn you are going to miss out on a BUNCH of great DLC, you have to buy them all separately now i believe. |

I played through as evil the first time and still ended up with fawkes, when i figured out you have to have good karma to get him i went to rivet city and donated caps to the church there until i had enough good karma to get him then went back to my evil ways

I finally beat the main story line and every DLC minus Broken Steel. Then I got Red Dead Redemption and kinda stopped playing for a while.
I played as Very Good the entire way through, with a very large emphasis on weapons, combat and repair. I want to start a new game, be as evil as possible, and super intelligent/sneaky/lucky. |

I got the original version delivered to my door for like 17.50 after tax and such. The cheapest I have seen the GOTY edition is $39.99 before tax or shipping, it is still over 50 at Best Buy, Wally World, Amazon and so on. So I saved at least $25 bucks or around 40 if I bought locally. So if I do decide to try some DLC I am not in a bad spot. |

Cheapest GOTY found online on sale = $40 + 3.50 tax + 3 to 5 shipping = 46.50 to 48.50 - 17.50 I paid = Aprox $30 savings... Current GOTY store price locally = 60 + 5.50 tax = 65.50 - 17.50 I paid = $48 savings... 5 DLCs at 800 points each. I know I WON'T be getting Mothership Zeta, so we will say 4 DLCs that I POTENTIALLY may or may not get... So 4x800 = 3200 points. Buy 2x 1,600 points cards off of ebay at $10 each = $20 for the 4 DLCs IF I want them... Add 20 to my 17.50 and I paid 37.50 which still saves me almost $20 from buying locally and still saves me about $10 from the cheapest on sale price of GOTY I found... Edit: This doesn't even bring up the possibility of them doing another half price DLC sale, in which I would save another $10... |

ETA: the only real must have are Operation anchorage and broken steel the others are nice but the second time i played the game i started right off in operation anchorage, you get so much stuff from it you get a huge boost starting the game. |

I really enjoyed Point Lookout. (edited to fix my weak quoting skills) The only thing Anchorage provides is the post-DLC goodies. Otherwise I wasn't a big fan of the add-on in general. I enjoyed The Pitt. It was more for the storyline because the steelyard was kind of a pain but doable. The ammo press is one of the most useful things in the entire Fallout universe. I NEVER use 5mm and I never used 10mm pre-Lookout, so it really helped boost my .44 magnum stock. Point Lookout was probably my favorite because it was the one I felt most immersed in. Plus it provided some nice goodies via the 10mm lever-action (which subsequently made me need the 10mm I was turning into .44 magnum). I guess the super-Rednecks were a little high on the HP, but doable with a .44 magnum revolver or Lincoln's repeater. Broken Steel was OK. There were some cool toys at the Air Force Base, which the Tesla Canon is pretty useful, but the Enclave Hellfire guys were a pain. Plus the whole thing felt really short and my previously useful deathclaw radio broadcaster seemed to have no effect on the deathclaws there. Mothership Zeta is probably the least of the five DLCs. The aliens are the most irritating thing in the game to kill because of some goofy biogel that makes them next to invincible, even against the super powerful alien guns. The only use I had out of Zeta was getting some alien weapons and the flat top .44 magnum the cowboy was carrying. Problem with the alien weapons is even at 100% repair, the depreciate quickly. I have played through twice and neither time did I take the evil route. I find it hard to alienate certain useful parts of the game by going bad (i.e. destroying Megaton). Heck, enslaving Flak (and subsequently saving him) means he can't be used at Flak N Shrapnels at Rivet City. That's been a bit of a pain since I finished that quest. And Paradise Falls became useless during that stretch because the slavers attacked me and I had to kill them all. Paradise Falls was a small price to pay since the vendors there never had much of a stock anyways. Rivet City and Megaton are far more useful.

There are a lot of fun mods, depending on how crazy you want to get. I recommend Marts Mutant Mod. Adds some cool options, including increased increased spawns. BUT... it makes the game tough. You'll also need Fallout Script Extender (FOSE). It has directions on where to put it in the Fallout directory as well. You launch FOMM (you'll need to do it in admin mode in Win 7) and from there turn on/off mods. Then, you use FOMM to launch FOSE which launches the game. http://fose.silverlock.org/ |

I have played through as good, bad, and neutral. They are all fun. Bad might be the best. It is much less tedious. the only thing that sucks is you cant kill children. Unlike in Fallout 1 & 2, yeah. I hope that Obsidian brings that back in NV. Even though I never did, killing children gave a whole new level of challenge to the game. |

My current game is getting interesting. Aside from the usual Marts Mutant Mod, Fellout, CALIBR, Street Lights, and 20th Century Weapons, etc... I'm running extremely slow leveling, disabled fast travel, ammo has weight, longer time scale, simple needs, and triage. In addition (since I can't fast travel, now) I found a blanket mod, that allows you to carry a blanket around with you that you can drop and sleep wherever. I also found one called "Rude Awakening" that you get randomly woken up by enemies or friendlies while sleeping out in the wasteland. And just to be more difficult, I opened up the console and set my carry weight to a max of 70 lbs, which with the backpack mod gives me an additional 35lbs. I figured anything over 100 might be stretching it. So now I'm limited on how much ammo I can carry, how many weapons, and still have to worry about food/water/sleep, as well as carrying medical supplies around. And I have to walk everywhere. |

I mainly take fingers and ammo now just because I can't take everything. With increased increased spawns, I'll run into groups of 10 Enclave and have to leave most of the gear just because I can't carry it all. But 10x armor, plus plasma rifles would be a lot of loot. |

Holy shit!... We have a flash light? I think I need to look over my controls... Yeah, I was about halfway through my first playthrough before I figured it out. I don't remember if they tell you in the manual, but you have to hold down the Pipboy button for a couple seconds to activate it. It's not much light, but better than nothing when you're indoors. I guess no Surefires made it through the great war. |

Quoted: Quoted: My current game is getting interesting. WOW. That weight restriction sounds like it'd be a pain. Although sounds like it'd make it a very interesting game. It is a pain, but it forces me to play differently. I used to just kill everything. Now I actually have to choose to skirt around a threat, turn around and leave, or to fight. A lot of the time I'll run into a large group of raiders and only have 35 rounds left. SUCKS. |

So am I the only one who used the Enclave Orbital Platform to destroy The Enclave and wipe out the Brotherhood of Steel? Found a nice pile of ammo, missiles, Fat Man bombs etc in the literally smoking hole that I made of their fortress. Good times. I took out the platform. Ar that point in my game I had plenty ammo and was only interested in special items (mainly armor). Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I did it less for the loot and more for the "I'm Evil, so let's see what happens" angle. |

As for the Tesla Cannons, I thought those were available anyways there.
