Need some opinions on how much kickboxing could affect your back.

I have done all I can do for my back (abs/core/flexibility/injections/dischotomy) , but still do regularly get spasms (have stenosis/herniations/scar tissue in the L3-S region)...to the point of being locked up for a week or so.  This is usually brought on by long periods of immobility (long car rides, ball games, etc... things where I can't move and my spine becomes compressed).

I already asked and there is no grappling/clenching.  The gym actually is more of a self defense place...defending knife/stick/gun attacks.  They do also have a ring where they spar with gloves and headgear...I talked to the lead instructor and some of the students compete in various regional and state events.

The first lesson is free.  I have 0 boxing/kicking martial arts experience.  I did wrestle and play football in HS...that's the extent of my man vs man "contact."

What do you say?  Dumb idea or should I give it a try?

Ask you doctor if it's a good idea.

Well I already know what that answer is going to be...  I was just wondering how much of a strain on one's back kickboxing would be.  Again no rolling/grappling everything is standup.

I had an L4-L5 diskectomy about 9 years ago. I can do most things but have occasional back issues. I do squats, deadlifts, ride my motorcycle etc. II used to do muay thai (prior to my back surgery) and was considering getting back to it but when I really go at the heavy bag hard it makes my back hurt. I can work on the bag moderately without much issue but too much impact causes pain later that Im guessing is due to inflammation.
If you are like me you will probably be able to do it if you take it easy but one wrong kick and you will probably be down for a few days.

Thanks, yeah that's kind of what I was thinking.  It sounds like we have similar problems.

I had my dischotomy at 19.  Just basically cleaned out all of the crap that had accumulated from football, lifting, and the fact my spinal canal is smaller than average so any herniations (and we all have them) were amplified so to speak.

Like I said the first session is free so I doubt I'll be receiving many kicks/punches...although I really want to just to see how far I can push myself mentally in a controlled environment.

Before the surgery I was told I'd probably have to get fusion on 2 or 3 levels sometime around 30...just due to disc degradation.  But I was really worried when I started reading about how much mobility it can take away and additional chronic pain it can add.  Has anyone gone through a lumbar fusion and had overall positive results?

Like I said I just have this urge to see how far I can push myself.  I think I've been bitten by the MMA bug...thankfully it doesn't seem as expensive as the black rifle bug.  We shall see.

ETA:  FYI I'm 23 now...

not as bad as say grappling/wrestling/rolling but I could see stuff like the plum and clinch work being hard on your back.

"Dumb idea or should I give it a try?"
