I've always been very rigid despite doing my best to stretch. Will yoga help break my rigidity? Or should I just stick with doing regular stretches?

Yoga is excellent for flexability. Its also a good work out, and strenghtens your core. It will help protect you from injuries from falling as it also helps balance. I was skeptical until I saw one of my favorite players of the Seahawks, Mack Strong who played fullback for 13 years[all pro ] practice it.

I've found that any consistent exercise that takes you through full ranges of motion increases general flexibility, whether it's yoga or olympic lifting.  There's no reason it shouldn't work.
