I've been wringing the nuerons out from my brain trying to vocalize my love for submission grappling. It is more than a simple martial art.

I can imaging one of the main reasons is, when I'm rolling all the stresses of my insignificant life dissapear like steam. It's just me against the other guy. Whoever wins, does so because they are the better fighter. Simple. No bullshit.

If I can sink a turning hip toss and spike someone into the mat and go to side control; I will savor it for a week in my mind like a prime rib steak. If I get tapped out, we shake hands knowing that we've elevated ourselves to a new conciousness only reachable through sweat and pain.

I've been rolling for nearly a year and a half now, off and on, and at this point is is not about getting subs or belts. The act of squaring off against someone capable of seriously hurting you cannot be replicated. From the inside you cannot explain it, from the outside you cannot understand it.

Time figuring out what you are made of, is always time well spent and jiu- jitsu speeds me out of my comfort zone faster than anything short of infanty combat.

Jiu- jitsu gives me confidence in my working day. I trust myself to do anything. No matter how shitty your day is; know that it can be much worse in the clutches of someones heel hook.

Jiu- jitsu gives me self control. I find myself less stressed as if the volume of the world has been put on "mute". I see things clearly.

Jiu- jitsu gives me strength, both physical and mental. Fighting has doubled the ammount of chinups i'm able to do since my active duty USMC days on morning PT alone. For no comprehendable reason I feel more respectful, understanding and accepting of others.

Jiu-jitsu has given me great friends; After puting hurtlocks on each other everone will go to dinner. Jiu- jitsu is truely a celebration of life.

Shout it with me JU-JIT-SU!

It's good to have the skills, but try to remember, rolling around over broken beer bottles, with your opponents buddies kicking you in the head, is not really a good time.

Personally I take Krav Maga for fitness and self defense, it incorporates Jiu Jitsu for effective locks but teaches this as a way to get back up as soon as possible and prepare for multiple attackers. That said more power to you but look into stand up skills as well. I know they teach a bit, but mostly to set up for a takedown.
