So i go to Benning for OSUT Infantry in november,Which gives me plenty of time to get Beyond fit.. My routine is this before lifting i stretch out my legs so i can run for about 7-10 minutes on the treadmill straight (No walking before, just once i hit the treadmill i start running). then after i rest and stretch out my muscles that im gonna work out that day .i do 2 muscles groups every workout. then the nextday i do not lift and just go to the track and do my cardio by running 2 miles and trying to get a fast time. So heres the question. is the warmup run before my lifting too much cardio when im gonna run the next day? My biggest struggle right now is my running. I lifted yesterday like stated above with 10 minute cardio for warm up and im suppose to go do just cardio today at the park but my legs do feel tired.should i just hack it out or left my legs rest? i wanna get in the best shape but i do not want to injure myself. I don't do it on the same day either. The standard approach, I believe, is warm-up, lift, stretch if you want, rest. Same for a run/swim/bike/elliptical day: warm-up, run/peddle/paddle/row/whatever, stretch if you think it helps, rest. Always warm up, never stretch before. Live forever. |
Correct. They're two different forms of exercise, so dedicate yourself fully to one then the other. Save the energy you'd be using on the treadmill and eek out some extra distance on a cardio day. |
| Right now, I am hitting cardio harder than weight training to lose weight but in Basic you will be doing more hiking than running so condition your feet for it otherwise you will have blister city. I tried to lift more than cardio before I went to OSUT back in 92' and I suffered on PT tests in the run. When we had road marches however I was used to it because I used to walk several miles a day at a steady pace to get ready for it before going to OSUT. Lift enough to maintain your strength because if you are a small guy you will probably gain weight in OSUT or vice versa if you are a bigger guy. Also, drink lots of water at least a gallon a day to get used to it because sodas and sports drinks are off limits in OSUT as well as supplements. Good luck. |

You want want to start running more. A lot more. OSUT = running. Talk to your local You're going to have fun come November. fwiw, I did pt with my recruiters (3 or 4 days a week) for about 4 months before going in, and was feeling pretty good about myself. Yeaaaah, that lasted for about 30 seconds when I got off the bus. ![]() eta: you might want to IM nukldragr and see if he wants to help. It depends on your goals. Do you need to lose weight, gain muscle, or just get in better shape? For me, I am trying to lose weight while keeping and possibly increasing my muscle mass. To that end, I do 20 minutes of hard cardio every time before I lift. Then I do some more hard cardio on my non-lifting days. And when I lift, I keep the tempo quick with little rest. YMMV. | I read somewhere that you should do some lite cardio to warm up your "connective tissue" before lifting. I do 10 minutes of real leasurly elyptical or walking on tread mill before lifting. Not even enough to sweat, just make sure I swing my arms and move my joints, especialy the ones I'll be using that day. Yeah, a hard run probably is to much though. |
