So I tried to do some wrestling/BJJ after a layoff and managed to twea something in my upper back and neck.  It hurts in my upper back on the right side of my spine between my shoulder blades when I look to the left. I was almost immobole for about 24 hours and hit ice and heat on the area and took anti inflamatories, got massaged, popped my spine, and it still hurts.  I felt nothing the night I injured my back.  Is this likely just a pulled muscle or pinched nerve or what?  I feel like I have to walk around like I am in a neckbrace.  I dont turn my head or alter my shoulder position to keep from feeling pain.  I cannot tuck my chin to my chest without pain either.  What is this and what should I do?  I have no insurance right now so no doctor visits.

You're just getting old like the rest of us.

Seriously, does it hurt when you turn your head?  Is it one of those tearing/burning type pain, or just sore muscle pain?  Could you have pinched a nerve in your neck?  Have you thought about seeing a chiropractor (in defilade)?

If it radiates down one of your arms, see a doctor immediately.  If it doesn't radiate, keep taking NSAIDS and alternate heat and ice.  If it's not better in a week, see a doctor.

Tough call....
Ive had a sprained neck for a long time. Its always hurting, cracking every few minutes. Ive been to many chiros with zero results. I just watch the way I sleep...try to keep a pillow plopped right between my neck and upper back.
Mine comes from, well the docs say anyways, from looking down while doing heavy standing exercises....

one goofy thing that a chiro told me to do was wrap a beer can in a towell and put that under my neck...it actually did help for a bit.

if your pain doesnt go away in a few days go see a doc..its worth the cost in the long run.
My chiros would usually charge me 35 bucks a session on avg....

I can look everywhere now without pain except straight down which has only enough pain for it to be annoying.  I rolled my upper spine forward once with 405 on my back trying to rack the bar in a squat rack and heard and felt a pop in my upper spine once.  I could not train for 3 months.  I was worried this would be a repeat or reaggrivation of that but I would say I should be OK to train by next week.  I have done lots of ice and used a heating pad and had my GF pop my spine several times as well as lots of anti inflamatories.  Of course now I have a cold and am miserable from that. It figures.

I dont think its your spine, its your neck...you need to have your neck re-alligned....
