I just finished running/walking 2 miles. Ive never really been in great shape, kind of always been "chubby". I am 6'5" and weigh 259. I am going to try to start eating better/less soda's, and run 3-4 times a week. I want to lose this gut Ive got goin and get healthier at the same time.

Right now I pretty much eat anything I want, and the only exercise I get other than work is playing hockey once a week. Ive tried to get into a habit of running before and fall off after about a week or two.

I figured by posting this, it might be the motivation I need to keep it up. Any advice or tips yall might have for a noobie would be appreciated.

Caleb

Edited to fix  weight.

If you plan of running alot, invest in a good pair of running shoes. they will save your body alot of stress/injury.

How old are you?

Be sure to stretch out well - especially AFTER the run and especially if you are over 30.

Good luck with the weight.

Me too!!!

I just finished a 3 mile run.

I used to do a lot of running but haven't for several years because of a bad knee.  Last year I had my ACL replaced.

I am really out of shape.

Lets talk about a few thing regarding running. First get some good shoes, not something that looks cool. Get a good pair of running shoes from a running store. They will fit you with the best for you.

Second start out slow. Not everybody starts out being to run 13. 1 miles, its takes many years to get into shape and learn to read your body. You start out too fast and too many miles in a week your more likley to have injuries and pains.

Start out easy I have seen this in a Magazine its a simple run walk program. I have passed this one to many people and they said it has worked well.

Week one.
run for one minute walk for 5 minutes repeat 5

Weeks two
Run for two minutes walk for 4 repeat 5 times

Week 3
Run for 3 minute walk for 3 minutes repeat 5 times

week 4
run for 4 minutes walk for 2 minute repeat 5 times

week 5
run for 5 minutes walk for one minute repeat 5 times

week 6
run for 14 minutes walk for one repeat twice

week 7
run for 30 minutes straight.

Shoot for doing this 3 to 5 times a week. 4 is perfect. If its too easy dont try to skip up take it one week at a time. Try and get a log and mark how far you go and how long it took everyday it works to help motivate you.

I too just started to run again after a 6 year break.  What happens if you start to fall behind to you repeat a week?

Hey, don't give up! That's the great thing about running: you can do it almost anywhere. If the hotel/motel you're staying at isn't in a good area or something, you can ask at the front desk and see if there's a high school or college nearby, drive there and run on the track or around the baseball fields or something. Or maybe find a park. All you need is the time (something I'm sorely lacking as my work has me on the road almost constantly nowadays; only home a day a week on average.)

I have never been able to run in Nike's.  no matter how much they cost.  I found NewBalance when i was in the Army have yet to look back.  Not the most costly but they work well for me.  Just go with what supports the arch most and stay away from cross trainers.

I just wanted to pass somethingon . I just got a new pair of shoes this weekend. I ussually wear Mizuno Wave riders. I I had a pair of Waver Rider 9's and this weekend I bought a pair of the Wave rider 10s, They really did a good job improving this shoe over last years models. So if you a runner that does not need any shoe for pronation problems this is a all around great shoe. With decent cushion and great arch support and a nice flow and they have up to a size 14.
