What is your goal for this contest? Add more mass, and lose some fat.

Final

I gained 5 lbs. during the first part of the competition. I went up as high as 211. Right now I am at 205, so my weight doesn't vary that much.

I tried to gain some mass. I worked my legs hard. I can see some progress. My squat weights are up. My deadlift number were up, until I hurt my wrist. Right now, they are on hold. I was doing chins as a supplement to curls for my biceps. I have since had to switch to straight pull-ups, because of the wrist issue. I did 4 x 10 at lunch, and followed it with 20 minutes of cardio. I have been doing this 3 times a week, along with an hour long workout in the morning.

What I learned:

It is nice to have a goal, instead of just exercising.

I'm not bulletproof anymore.

OK final weight is 148 (up 8lbs) wanted to get to 150lb but I ran alot. Not sure on the body fat % though I felt leaner in the midsection. I went up in my dumbbell bench from struggling with 50 pounders to doing 3 sets of 8 with 65lb pounders. All in good form. I can even do two sets of 10 dips with a 45lbs on the weight belt. 20 deadhang pull-ups is still not a problem. I have been doing 3 sets of 5 with a 25lb plate on a belt to help too. The main improvement though (and probably why I did not pack on as much mass) was my running. I started struggling doing 20 minutes of running 3 times a week. Now I run between 30-60minutes and lap everyone at the YMCA track. I feel much stronger, can run again like when I was in the Marines, am ready for Special forces selection well maybe not that ready yet. I see the change not so much visually but physically. Mentally I had to force my myself to accept that I could do the Heavy weights. I also quit drinking soda and ate like a horse. I also have tubs of Muscle milk that helped get the extra intake. Not the greatest change but it's a stepping stone for me

My first official wheigh in for the contest was 183.6 on January 8. My lowest wheight was 168.6 on April 12. Bodyfat % I have no idea. What I have learned along the way: The importance of correct form. I learned a lot about how the body works, through both exercise and nutrition. Most importantly I learned how little I actually know. My biggest mistake during the contest was made before it even started. As soon as the idea of the contest came about I started eating like a mad man. I figured the more fat I packed on, the better. Well, I feel I could have ended up with a lot better after pictures if I hadnt planned to fatten up for the start of the contest. It has been great motivation though. A couple of times before this I had attempted to loose wheight, which never made it very far. This is the most serious attempt I have ever made by far.

Well, I took Remman's advice and shaved EVERYTHING. Hoo! There ought to be an instruction manual for that kind of thing. A primary lesson is to LOCK THE BATHROOM DOOR while you're in process. Otherwise your six year old daughter will burst in on you and ask difficult quesitons. No matter how well or completely you answer those quesitons, the neighbor *will* call your wife within 30 minutes and say, "Your daughter just told my daughter that your husband is in the bathroom shaving his body so that he can post naked pictures of himself on the internet!"

Within two hours, word will get around, and your mother will call you about this. Gads...

I feel very good about my performance during the competition, and there is really nothing in my way of continuing my trend towards fitness. I am a little disappointed with the before and after images, because I don't feel that they accurately portray how much better I am on every level. I no longer eat like I used to, and I don't even have a desire to eat like I used to. Remman's tagline is: "Everybody wanna be a bodybuilder, but dont nobody wanna lift no heavy ass weight." (Ronnie Coleman) That's absolutely true in my case, and it was a real struggle to figure out how to accomlish regular workout sessions. By turning it into a meditation, I have been able to overcome my long-term aversion to the 'boredom' of lifting. I stopped thinking of it as a task, and started asking, "What's the lesson?" I have learned to enjoy putting my body through these paces. I feel better on every level - physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional.

I think that the primary lesson I've taken out of this experience can be summed up in one word: 'Gentleness.'

Besides lifing a bunch of 'heavy ass weight', I also took to iron rod training during the
competition. I get a 6' long 1" steel pipe and I dance with it. It wasn't heavy enough, so I filled it with concrete. It is impossible to force it to do anything you want it to do. You have to dance with it. You have to be gentle with it. You have to have compassion for it. If you don't, it will hit you in the face and knock you out. I've spent a lot of time looking up at the stars, thinking to myself, "What the hell happened!?" Yeah, that pipe is a mean bitch, but I'm learning a lot of lessons...and it distracts me in some ways so that I can unlearn the things I 'know'. Lifting the weight is the same way. You have to be gentle with it, otherwise it will break you. I no longer see this as an obstacle, but as a teacher from which I have many lessons to learn.

Only recently have I started to really be able to appreciate the somatic nature of this practice. The masters, for instance, constantly reference gentleness, but it's really hard to grasp the practice of gentleness when you're shattering a guy's skull. It took me a decade to come to gentleness in my practice. Having children has really refined this in me, strangely enough. Last month I had the opportunity to train with an older fighter from Michigan. The details are boring, but what was interesting was that I did a knee drop on him (which ended the session) and I had a deep feeling of gentleness about it that I hadn't really achieved before. It was the same feeling I have when I'm holding my kids, but in this case I was breaking a guy's ribs.

I have been out of the fight circuit for two years, but with this competition driving me in the right direction, I'm going to take it up again. Getting married and having children can have a startling effect on a person - not always for the good. I not only feel like I have my strength back, I feel like I have *myself* back, and this time I intend to keep myself.

What is your goal for this contest? Improve physical condition and health.

... A few observations.
At almost 49, I still very much enjoy the feeling received after a good workout, it's the best I feel all day. Gains don't come like they do when you're 20, recovery takes longer as well.

Believe I would have had much better results had I stuck with the program with the intensity and focus I did the first couple months. But in the past few weeks my diet got sloppy at times, and I reduced my cardio frequency and intensity.

The most encouraging part was actually feeling stronger and walking with a bit more confidence – which is my motivation to stick with it. For the initial several weeks my appetite was in control but it got where I didn't have the will to back away from seconds at the dinner table. My weight suffered, I actually gained weight by not paying attention. At one time I got down to 239.8 and was very disappointed when I gained weight back up above the 240 mark. However, one of the trainers in the gym that took my infrared body-fat content measurement reminded me that muscle is denser than fat and don't focus too much on weight. Ideally though, I should be down to at least 220.
Sticking with the fundamentals, higher repetition until my weight is in control and achieved my body-fat content goal.

The good news: I'm not stopping just because a deadline is up – I'm sticking with a regular exercise routine / schedule, but I'll have more firm goals. Hell, maybe I'll send in a third set of pics in 6 months.

My workout regimine was:

Mon - Chest/Bi
Wed - Legs
Fri - Shoulders/Back

I alternate exerceise and train to failure every set. 2-3 exerceise per bodypart.

If I ran on the treadmill it was at 1.0 degree incline for 3 miles.  If it was outside I tracked out a 2.75 mile course around the neighborhood.  I ran everyday I could. Sometimes 6 or 7 times a week. I found I could not run after legs so sometimes that was just a mile or two because it felt like mile 2 or 3 after the first step.  I rarely trained in MMA because one of the guys I trained with was busy selling his house and the other was at some pro training camp in Canada.  He is supposed ot fight in King of the Cage in like a month or so but he never makes weight and has dropped his last 5 fights because he cant control his eating.

I just worried about no smoking, no sugar and bulking most of the time in the begining.  I went from 209.0 to 222 lbs in about 8 weeks.  Then I crash dieted to 205.0 pounds for the photo eating 1000-1500 calores a day for 3 and a half weeks.  It was not fun at all but the other guys were losing a LOT more weight than I could and I was kind of scared I would not lose enough weight.  I got pretty weak those last weeks.

Supplements were ECA 3 x a day, Creatine for the bulk up phase, Vanadyl, Isopure MRP, All The Whey protein, and some multi vitamins.

I got a tanning membership and tanned a lot but I used a spray tanner to help the pics.  That was the most annoying shit EVER.  I wanted something that could be washed off when I was through which meant as I sweated because I was having to set the camera to auto and run over and pose it would come off my forehead... notice the white forehead? lol.  Now I understand why bodybuilders use that paint/stain stuff.

For my pre pic routine I carb depleted and circuit trained my whole body to get rid of glycogen, then carbed up, restricted sodium and fluid intake, rubbed Preperation H on my belly skin to help pull excess water out, took a Diuerx OTC diuetic, and tried to practice my poses.  I had to take about 50 pics and recharge my camera more than once to get pics that were not all messed up as I did that myself and was running back and forth.  Basically I tried to follow all the little suggestions Remman made about how to help the final pic and I drank some alcohol before the pics to try to get more vascularity as I was so dehydrated my veins had collapsed.  I have gained about 2-3 pounds since those pics once I rehydrated.  I appreciated all the suggestions and help as I have never tried to do this kind of thing before.

I have been more muscular but fatter and leaner but smaller.  I think this is one of the best conditions I have been in as far as all around.  I would like to gain 10 lbs more muscle and lose 5 lbs more fat but that will be VERY hard and push the genetic limit of my body.  It would take me WAY more than 3 months to acheive that as progress from heere will be difficult.  I am just going to concern myself with certain goals I would like to achieve for the moment instead.

20 dead hang wide grip overhand pull ups non stop
70 push ups non stop.
1 mile in under 6 minutes
3 miles in 18-21 minutes
100 non stop situps
be able to place my feet 12 inches apart and place my fists on the ground between my heels with straight legs

The only one I am close to is the 6 minute mile.  I am kinda close to the chins and pushups.  I have bad cramping problems with my abs for some reason... probably the high levels of caffeine I take.

I think DevL brought in a ringer.  I think he used a fake tan in the after pics.  I think he was really sticking his tummy out and not flexing in the before pics.  I think he used something to suck out the water in his tummy making his abs look more defined.  Damn it I want his frigging Geissle trigger.

On top of all the above he's wearing the same damn underwear after 3 months.

... Appreciate your kidding, but jest aside; I must say, DevL, without question, deserved to win - because of his commitment to do so. He was a "stud" in this competition. Although I am ~80% satisfied with my achievements during the 90-day exercise (no pun intended), DevL attained nearly 100% goal-objectives - that is commendable, all things considered. That is precisely what it takes to win. I can blame my age or my initial poor-shape deficit, but I cannot account for my lack of will-power "to win" in the end.

... That said, I do however feel much better physically & mentally and now realize that all my guns, ammo and survival-gear savvy means shit if I cannot perform physically - nor should yours. As noted initially, I looked at my condition and realized 90-days wasn't going to unfuck years of abuse. I want to attain a level of personal physical-satisfaction, and I estimate it will take me another 60-days to get to "maintenance' level.

... Remman sir, you are The Man for encouraging these types of "contests' even though there is so much more to winning trophies. Thank you for your drive and encouragement, I hope to see you initiate future, similar contests to improve gun-owners physical conditions

ECA?

Ephedrine
Caffeine
Aspirin

Medical studies show a greater loss of fat, greater retention of muscle, faster overall weight loss and, of couse, increased energy and decresed appetite.  The patented ratio is:

200 mg caffeine
20 mg ephedrine
100 mg aspirin

I use:

200 mg Nodoz caffeine
25 mg Bolt ephedrine
81 mg Bayer one a day buffered aspirin

I get these seperately and make my own ECA stack.  It is cost effective and tghe products are always consistantly dosed and will not spoil or rot like an herbal preperation can.

The "ECA stack" is, in my opinion, the most effective over the counter ergogenic aid available in the US.  It is a powerful stimulant cocktail and is not without side effects, but it works.  Yohimbine, the active component in Yohimbe bark is also effective but it makes me have bad headaches, feel like I am going to have a heart attack if I take it with ECA, and seems to upset my stomach. It is used in products for "male enhancement" as it is a vasodialtor.

The ECA stack was the foundation of many herbal products that are now banned like Ripped Fuel, Metabolife, etc.  The individual synthetic drugs are still available OTC but herbal preperations combining these have been banned for sale as weight loss supplements.  It was quite common to see companies use guaranna (high caffeine level), ephedra (contains ephedrine), and white willow bark (a salycilic acid like aspirin) and try to get a ratio of 200:20:100 of the active ingredients for their supplements, thus avoiding the patent on the sythetic combination of 200:20:100 which is a real medication.

I've been pounding away at the gym lately, but had I remembered about this I would have at least got a tan or something.  Maybe dieted hard for the last week.  I really didn't know guys took this thing this seriously.

Plus I feel and look a million times better for having done it.

Thanks again to AGW for running the contest, and to LaRue for sponsoring it. It turned out to be the motivation that I needed to get in the mindset of making a big change!
