Any Krav Maga practitioners/students here? I took it for about 3 months during Summer last year but quit due to school pressure. I was wondering how long it takes to fully master the concept, how long you have practiced/studied it, and how proficient you think you are in it. The reason being that I plan to take it again, seeing how much of an effective combat martial art it is (while sport Karate will get you killed AFAIK), and I was wondering how long it takes and how much dedication is required to gain a good understanding of it. By good understanding I mean both the hand-to-hand combat aspect and weapon combat. Thanks. PS: If anyone in the Austin area can point me to a good KM training center I would appreciate it as well. |

I'd suggest finding a school associated with this organization, Krav Maga Been taking it for a year and half now, attending classes 2 nights a week (2 hours each night). We are still always learning new techniques. Lately we have been going over alot of ground fighting techniques and wrist/arm locks; as well as sparring. Can't determine how proficient I am, as the last real fight I was in was about 15 yrs ago, but I would consider myself on roughly the same level as 3 of the other students who are in "Level 2" Training (all four of us have our yellow belts), but definately more proficient than some of the other Level 2 students. Can I get out of a choke hold from either the front, side, back, or while I'm on the ground? YES!! Can I get out of a bear hug? YES!! Do I know how to strike with either punches, open hand strikes, elbows, or knees? YES!! If someone tackles me down, or I fall down to the ground, do I know how to fight while on the ground? YES!! Can I defend myself now if anything were to happen, ABSOLUTELY!! I am much more confident now than I was a year ago. Only through constant repetitions can you truly "master" any concept. |

I watched a youtube video of two students studying Krav Maga for about a week or two in Israel and they were showing weapons combat with handguns. I was wondering if they teach that here? www.youtube.com/watch?v=0i7N6Y7OYwI Thanks for the response. |

yes, we also train in "weapons defenses" against pistols - pistols are pointed at us from the front, from each side, from behind us, to each side of our temples, while we are seated, and while we are on our knees. We have also started training against 2 attackers both with pistols, on opposite sides of us. against knives - over hand knife attacks, under hand knife attacks, slashing knife attacks, defending against an assailant how has a knife to our throat. |
Do you know if the curriculum also involves how to HANDLE a weapon as demonstrated in the video? Or do I actually have to go to Israel for that? ![]() Then again I guess regular firearms instruction courses should suffice. |

Interesting video Krav Maga Training in Israel. No they don't teach weapons handling. The course focuses on unarmed self defense technique's. The pistol technique's taught by the Israeli's is different than what is taught by most schools here in the US. The Israeli's carry their pistols with an empty chamber. They draw the pistol straight up to their chest, then rotate the pistol 90 degrees in order to rack the slide back to load a round with their non firing hand, at the same time driving the pistol forward with their firing hand, at the same time rotating the pistol back. They believe in firing using the Isosceles stance, instead of the Weaver stance. They drop down to their knees during a reload, in order to either take cover behind an object, or if there is no cover, to make themselves a smaller target. |
| At my school here in San Antonio, Texas, we learn to defend against handgun, rifle, shotgun, knife, and unarmed attacks. we also have a ground class that is strictly ground fighting. I've been doing krav for 2 years this march, I am also a level three student which is a orange belt. And believe me krav is tough if your a couch potato, which is why we also have kickboxing, kettlebell, and weightlifting classes that will kick your butt into shape. |

hey Codename46, I just saw this IDF Counter-Terror Pistol Course DVD over at Brigade Quartermaster. This might have the type of pistol training you are looking for. |
ICEAGE, are you referring to the Krav Maga classes being BS and not full contact? If you are, then whomever you have spoken with either has no clue what they are talking about, or is/has attended a poor school. In the year and a half I've been taking classes, I've unfortunately injured 2 of the other students; I tore the ligaments in one guys knee while I did a take down on him, and 1 had to get stitches on the bridge of his nose because his nose caught the heel of my foot, as he didn't turn his face away fast enough when I put him in an arm bar, while we were grappling. I've also had 2 other students inadvertently get bloody lips from being punched in the mouth, and 1 other student had a welt right under his eye. Myself, I've had a few bloody lips, and I thought I almost had my front teeth knocked out recently, as I caught a sparring partners punch with my face!! ![]() I don't recommend getting the DVD's, as there are subtle little moves in some technique's that the video's do not teach. |

Well thats good to hear, the people who claims KM is "Watered down" probably only had BS schools and teachers. There is no KM places near me so I will get the DVDs. Not going to be loosing anything since I'll be getting them for free. I've learned the DVDs arent the same as instructors, but its beter then no training at all. |
Whoa. It's EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Thanks! |
