| What is the secret to doing these? They are really hard for me while my bench is pretty decent. My shoulder feels incredibly weak when I am doing these and it is the limiting factor. Cant do more than 8-10 on my left arm (my weak arm) and I am really wobbly. I do even less on my strong arm. |

Other than the wow factor, they won't do much for you, except possibly injure you. One amred presses and tricep extensions are good. Research has shown that each arm can lift 15% more weight when working alone than when working in combination with the other arm. I used to do them in Mallorca at bar contests, but that was twenty years ago. Then again as a drill sergeant to impress the young recruits, up until 9/11, but haven't seen the need to do them since. |
I agree, one armed push up are nothing more than a ego booster. If it doesnt feel right, stay away. |

One armed pushups are a great exercise, just like one leg squats (pistols) and one arm pull ups. It takes a significant amount of practice to get them right and its very technical (not just about strength). Mastering these exercises shows a dedication to fitness that most people are not willing to obtain. The amount of regular pushups or your bench is not an indicator of how many one-arm push ups you can do. Read Naked Warrior by Pavel. The trick is learning how to screw your shoulder into the socket to protect it, activating your lats and visualizing pushing the floor away from you not yourself away from the floor. Start by doing them against the wall and gradually decrease the angle until your on the ground. Keep your shoulder screwed in, feet apart, body extremely tight, back must stay flat and squezze the ground with your fingers. |
