Yes I was one of the crazy 20,000+ runners in the 80 degree heat running Boston on Monday.

I finished.  I did not need medical attention.  my time was almost 1 hour slower than my slowest marathon to date.  I worked harder during this race than anything I have ever done before.

Good for you!!  Way to gut it out.  How did it feel (besides painful)?   Cramps?  Did you get water every chance you had?

I'm doing my second on Memorial Day weekend, in Traverse City, MI.  I have been slacking on the training (sick, cold weather, etc.), but am still going to try.

The procedure at water stops were as follows:

One water cup on the head.
One water cup down the back of the neck.
One cup of gatoraid to drink.

Suprisingly, I didn't cramp much at all.  I didn't eat afterward, due to the the nasuea I was experiencing.  I am still walking funny.  I hope my legs get back to normal soon.

Is the Traverse City race flat?

Yeh, it's supposed to be.  It's out and back on Old Mission Peninsula near Traverse City, but heard there is a little bit of a hill at the turnaround.  I did Chicago in 2000 (4:25:00 with bad calf cramps), and that was nice and flat, but with 30,000 runners.  This is about 1,300 runners, so it should be real different.

My biggest worry is being in shape this early in the year, usually don't run outside much before Memorial Day.  Ran 14 last weekend and it was work.  Going to try and do 17 this weekend, then 20, then a half marathon (race), then we'll see after that.

A belated congrats on your Boston finish. Probably tougher than qualifying to run it, eh? BTW, what did you run to qualify and where?

If you're looking for flat and/or fast races, Chicago or St. George (UT) are in October. Tucson's in December. There are a few others that generally have a good reputation for PRs as well, but those are the ones that pop to mind.

I'll train in 80- or 90-degree heat, but I really, really would prefer not to race in it.

Why someone would want to run that far on purpose is beyond me.

kato4moto,

I ran a 3:13 at the Cleveland Marathon as my qualifier (I need a 3:15 or better).  If I want to get back to Boston, I will have to qualify again this fall.

I have only ever run local marathons.  I think I underestimated how much sleeping in a strange bed and altering eating habits will mess with my routine to run.

It was great to run Boston.  Great course.  An ass-load of runners and spectators.

jadams951...  running that far is part of my SHTF plan.
