I just finished up week 12 in the Stronglifts 5X5 program and my squats are getting up there, at least for me (I'm at 230 lbs 5X5).
Up to now, I have been wearing my running shoes and notice that when the squat gets tough, I tend to lean forward. A lady at the gym said I'm wearing the wrong shoes, and she's right. She and another weightlifter at work suggested special built weightlifting shoes. I am not opposed to paying good money for the right gear, but weightlifting specific shoes are about $150 and I need a new pair of running shoes, which are >$170. A lady at church who is an avid Crossfitter said she uses Chuck Taylor's and I see those recommended on other weightlifting sites as a lower cost alternative. What are your thoughts on saving $100 and buying Chuck Taylor's for squatting and dead lifting? |

Chucks are fine if you're mobile enough. But are basicly hipster moccasins. They work fine for deads and press too. I squat in squat shoes because of bad mobility in my left ankle. Shoes let me get lower and are more stable for me. Do not use running shoes or anything with a squishy bottom.
Nike Romaleos 2. Love them. I don't use my chucks anymore because I deadlift with nude feet. And with Nike Roms, I'll probably never squat in chucks again. |

Chucks were popular before hipsters were even a thing, and honestly I see more "normal" people wearing chucks than hipsters. At any rate if you're a mobile low bar squatter chucks are a good inexpensive choice. Mark Rippetoe called them hipster moccasins... Not me. |

I went to Kohl's to get a pair of Converse, they had them on sale and had a mountain of them, but nothing bigger than size 12
They don't even had 14's available on their website. Get smaller feet, duh. Feet that big are dumb. Barefoot also works. I like good shoes better but I can squat more barefoot than I can with bad shoes, although some less than with good shoes. I usually like to dead lift barefoot or in my Nanos. Nanos are also really good for squats if you've got the ankle mobility. |

bare feet for both squats and deads makes a dramatic difference (although makes it tough to find a gym running shoes SUCK for squats and deads.. Yeah, I figured that out a few months ago. I pulled the Adidas wrestling shoes I got in college out of the closet and use them to lift. It's a definite improvement. |

I've done some Crossfit and some lifting in my Vibram Five Finger thingys. They ultimately caught a bad rep for running in but they accomplish the barefoot thing just fine for lifting up heavy things and then dropping them real loud to get chick's attention. I've run 100s of miles in mine. It's all how you run. |

The romaleo and the metcon are different enough that if one fits, the other might not. The romaleo is wider for sure, Nike metcons are too tight on my wide-ass feet, but the Romaleos are "just right". OP, why not look at a Nano? You could run in it better than a chuck, and it has a low solid heel and a nice flat sole. I have done plenty of lighter weight squats in Nanos, though I will say buying a pair of nice Adipowers or Romaleos is way more of a solid investment than a pair of running shoes. Running shoes are a consumable, and you have to budget them as such. A good weightlifting shoe, used only for lifting weights, will last years. |

I buy Brooks (Dyad or Glycerin) to run in and I am getting a new pair of them this week at about $170-$180. The Chucks are an inexpensive ($55) stop gap for now. I am sure in the next 6 months I will buy a nice pair of purpose built weight lifting shoes. You're right about running shoes being consumable. I hear people say they get 400 miles out of a pair of running shoes, I get less than 200 miles, I guess I'm not lightfoot. |

By RolandofGilead: Quoted: So what's the deal with nanos? Are they worth the money? Yeah. You can find sales though. Mine were $70 at eastbay.com Very comfy, tongue makes it weird to put on. 9.5/10, would buy again. FROM THIS THREAD |

Quoted: Whatever happened to Do-Wins? I have a pair of Rogue Do-Wins that my wife bought for me a few years ago and they're still going strong. They're wider in the toe than some of the other options and used to be fairly inexpensive at about $100. My do-wins didn't hold up well. Lasted only about a year before the strap stitching started to come apart and the sole separate from the body at the toe. Meanwhile, year 2 on my Romaleos and they look...basically new, nevermind I've lifted far far more weight in them than i ever did in the do-wins. |

With how much I spend on running shoes in a year; I could buy a single pay of sweet ass lifting shoes that would last me forever |

Maybe not for OP's fuckin' huge hobbit feet though. ![]() I've got a brand new pair of Nano 5s if anyone wants them. Call it, and IM me. I tried size 9.5 and they were too small. I'm in a 10 now (they fit), and am too lazy to send the 9.5s back to try and get the refund. I wore them maybe 5 times aroumd the office and house. Still new. I'd give them to the OP, but he has feet like friggin Sasquatch. |

Muscledriver went out of business and, subsequently, so did all the Pendlay shit. And the rogue do-wins were just rebranded pendlays. My do-wins didn't hold up well. The Rogue Do-Wins were a double-strapped, suede version of the 2010 Pendlay Do-wins, which were single-strap and leather. The later Pendlay models were different in several ways, including the sole, heel, and strap configuration. Almost a completely different shoe. |

These or chucks come close to squatting barefoot. |

I was bummed when Altra discontinued those shoes.
I have found these to be a nice alternative and great training shoe... https://www.amazon.com/Topo-Athletic-Halsa-Training-Running/dp/B00TQ6M3YA/ref=pd_sim_309_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=414zliD5cKL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=G1GGFWMEP65SE889EEX7 Quoted:
If you're low bar squatting, I've been liking flat shoes more. But for high bar, front squats or cleans, I'd definitely want weightlifting shoes. I've had VS athletic ones and they've held up well enough for years now I'm so hipster, they don't even make the shoes I've been lifting in anymore http://thatlinuxbox.com/blog/images/articles/review-altra-samson_1.jpg |
