I am getting tingling/numbness in my index and middle fingers from a slipped disc. It happens when I turn my head certain directions and, as of today, during deadlifts.
Anyone else been down this road? If so what treatment did you use and what was recovery like? I am inclined to push past it but the growing lack of sensitivity on my fingertips is concerning. |
| First get an evaluation from a genuine specialist. Mine was really bad and needed surgery. I still do home traction sometimes. The function of my right arm will never be the same but is near normal, I almost lost all use of it. Home traction devices may help you and be all that you need or you might need more. Don't put it off, go get seen by a neuro guy/surgeon. Some of the exams are not cheap but do it. |

First guy nailed it.
I put it off for a while. Thinking I'd get over it, fortunately my case is mild, did a little physical therapy and home traction now. I know the first couple times I said something to a doctor(VA)it got shrugged off, then I got one to order an X ray which didn't show anything, then finally they did an MRI and he was like oh shit you have a slipped disc. |

I had a herniated disc in Aug of last year. Surgery (disc replacement) in Oct. I could not raise my arm over my head.
The week before the disc herniated I was pressing 190lbs and benching 265lbs. Recovery from surgery was good. I was driving 4 days after surgery. off all pain meds in less than 2 weeks. I lost a lot of upper body strength in just a few weeks between Aug and Oct.. In April I participated in my 2nd powerlifting meet. I pressed 187lbs. (85kg). As others have said Get to a doc, Get an MRI and get a proper diagnosis. Good luck. ETA the disc replacement was C4/C5. |

I am not having any issues overhead pressing, it's pretty much heavy deadlifts that are making it tingle. How long until you could start really getting after some serious strength training again? Also I believe mine is c5/c6 of c6/c7. I am getting numbness at the tip of my index finger. |

Ask your doc about radio frequency ablation. I had tingling fingers from a pinched nerve and the procedure has been 100% effective at curing my tingling.
Much better than an epidural. Best of luck OP. http://www.spine-health.com/treatment/injections/radiofrequency-ablation-procedure |

I started training about 3 weeks after surgery. My 1st press workoout was humbling. Normally warm up with the bar for a few sets of 5 or 10.
1st workout WAS the bar! .
Squats and deads came back fast once I was able to control the bar. Press and bench have taken a long time to come back and I'm not at my pre-op PRs yet but I am VERY close. One other thing I have added is deep tissue massage a couple of times a month. I found a lady who knows how to do real deep tissue, This is not a relaxing spa massage. It hurts like hell and I DO NOT workout on those days, I had some residual pain in my right arm that she has all but completely releived. If you've never done real deep tissue, you have to work up to it. It's process. But I think it is benficial, It WONT fix a true herniation or blown disc, but may be helpful in recovery if you go the surgery route. My .02 |

My .02 I am worried about how bad it is, the progression has been alarming. Here is the rough time line: 2 months ago only an issue when sleeping 1 month ago it started tingling when I look certain directions 2 weeks ago I got some numbness at the tip of my index finger Last week the numbness became permanent Today the tingling has been the first time that I have had tingling in my hand doing normal activities, such as walking around a museum. All the tingling is in the hand, not above the wrist. Only an issue with the right hand. |

To be honest I had been trying to keep this spinal issue off of my military health records. But... I will get it looked at. Quoted:

Go see a doctor or someone. It won't get better on its own if it's been two months and getting worse. To be honest I had been trying to keep this spinal issue off of my military health records. But... I will get it looked at. Why? As long as you can still do your job and pass the fitness test, seeing a doctor shouldn't impact your career negatively. May even get some relief. i had to pay for my chiro out of pocket but I got some referrals and opinions from other doctors that were covered |

I've broken both my L4 and L5.
Stop doing dead-lifts until a real doc okays you to do them. They put a lot of stress on this area. I still do single arm dumbell/kettlebell lifts, but have matured enough to realize my heavy dead-lift days are over. I've also learned to listen to my body and not do stuff that is harmful to it, based upon my own stupid ego. |

I got my MRI results.
C5 - degenerative disc disease, a bone spur, cervical stenosis, and arthrosis, and C7 - degenerative disc disease. No issues doing any sorts of exercise, no surgery recommended. Doc thinks a fusion may be in my future, but that i should be decades away. |
