I have been trying to gain weight since before Christmas, and it is working, I am up about 6 lbs since the beginning of December.
It is starting to wear me out though, I'm on 3300 calories a day, and it feels like I am just eating non-stop. Even sneaking olive oil and peanut butter into things and drinking about 1/4 gallon of milk a day it is just beating me up. Today I woke up completely un-hungry, I basically had to force myself to eat breakfast and lunch. I don't want to miss any days until the end of the month though because I feel like one missed day will sabotage an entire week. It's a very strange transition to eating when I am not full from only eating when I was hungry. I could cheat and eat total junk, but I feel like that would be counter productive too. If I was working right now there would be no way I could pull it off, I would feel sick all day. Anyone else go through the same? |

And why are you so obsessed with gaining weight that you are abusing your body this way? Probably because he wants to gain muscle mass and a "dirty" bulk followed by cutting is much easier for the majority of people than a "lean" bulk. |
|
Lean bulk is a bullshit concept and a waste of time if you're not an enhanced athlete. If you are enhanced, lean bulking is still a waste of time. Increasing calories by 10-20% over tdee is ideal. Dirty bulk is awesome fun, but inefficient, as it's hard to drop the excess goo afterwards. I wnt through too many of these bulks. It just left me fat with a strange illusion of being muscular. Ideal goal seems to be increase calories for a few months, so you gain a lb or so per week. Do this, then hold the top weight for 2-3 months, then reduce calories to lose 1 lb per week for a couple months. Rinse/repeat. Look atthhe long term. This is assuming you're lifting and doing appropriate lifting and decent macro partitioning.

Pullups, decline pushups, rings, stuff like that. Trying to make it difficult enough to stay under 10 reps per set. That's my problem though, I'm not ever hungry. A typical work day for me is wake up, coffee and maybe a bowl of ceral, work most of the day, maybe grab a cup of coffee and a snack in the afternoon, then come home and gorge supper and second supper. Getting used to eating all day is hard. |

Part of the reason I'm trying to get fatter and stronger right now, to compensate for that spring time weight loss. I also like to stay in shape so I don't go into the first week getting my ass kicked and feeling dead. |

I think it would be easier to lose 10 lbs than to gain it. This is my cousin helping me with a typical work day though, we can really burn some calories. Aside from smash it all up, we had to get it out of there by hand.

For me lifting heavy increases my appetite. I've been back at lifting seriously now for 12 weeks and have gained 12 to 13 pounds. I'm starting to cut back calories and do a bit more cardio while trying to keep my weight the same now. I've never been able to gain weight without lifting heavy both because my muscles never grew otherwise and for some reason I couldn't develop enough appetite without lifting heavy. Appetite will grow over time and several small meals is easier than a few big meals because then you will feel bloated and stay full longer. Up the milk and the best thing about bulking is being able to eat meaty pizza when ever you want |

Yep I hate y'all. No kidding. I've been able to get by just fine most of my life on what I considered plenty of food, then a few years ago I used MFP and realized that my average intake was somewhere about 1,800 calories and I was chubby. Not a terrible diet, but not great either. Now I'm gaining weight by trying to eat as much 'good' food as I possibly can and doing Starting Strength (6 weeks in now, with a short break near the beginning for a cracked rib), but I'm nowhere NEAR the 5,000 max calories Rippetoe recommended, I'd doubt I'm very close to his lower end of 3,500 on most days. I feel like I'm eating everything in sight and I'd bet my gains would be better or more consistent if I would eat more, but I can't do it. Oddly enough, folks are asking how I'm losing weight. I can't fit into any of my pants anymore, my borderline small shirts don't even come close anymore and I ripped the ass out of my workout pants doing squats this morning. Up 10lbs in 6 weeks. Where do I go for elastic waistband Carharts? If I'd eaten this way without the lifting I'd be a damn blimp, waddle me out the door and put me in a pasture type fat. |

I would suggest not to do squats in Carharts.

October- March is usually bulk time, with the changeup and weight loss beginning in April. I usually get down to my lowest BF% by July, and hold it for a few months. It works well for my age and body habitus. |

How did you figure 3300? Maybe that's more then you need to gain. I used this page to figure my calories for cutting or bulking. For me at 15% BF, 165 lbs, and moderate activity level about 2300 cal is maintenance. I'd go 300 to 500 in either direction for cutting or bulking. My long term goal is 180 at under 10% BF. Probably going to take years but I can wait http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=156380183 This site was helpful too http://www.calorieking.com/ |

I plugged it into myplate and that's what it gave me.
It's actually like 3250, but I just rounded it. My workouts (if I calculated the correctly) should be burning around 400 calories, plus I have to chop wood each morning for a little while. To maintain I need like 2300, so add 500 for extra weight and the 400 for working out and it seems right about on point. One pound a week seems reasonable. |

I lift my ass off 4 days a week and if I go over about 2500/day I get flabby in the midsection. That doesn't seem right, not saying I don't believe you but that seems odd. I have been eating about 2400 a day for a few weeks, losing about 1 pound a week. I need to lose about 15 pounds. That is with no conditioning, just lifting 4 days a week. |

Man, I relapsed hard today.
I had to get up and run right out the door because my sisters car wouldn't start, got it jumped and went and did my errands, then had to shovel roofs and plow for the rest of the day. I slugged a cup of coffee first thing in the morning and didn't eat a single calorie until nearly 3pm, there's no way I'll be able to get them all in before bed time. I need to come up with a plan for when work starts or it's going to be a similar scenario most days and I'll lose all my progress. |

I need to come up with a plan for when work starts or it's going to be a similar scenario most days and I'll lose all my progress. I keep a sandwich bag with two scoops of protein powder in my backpack for these kinds of days. That way at least I'm getting something in me, and it's not terrible stuff either. Usually what I do is have the baggie of powder in a shaker bottle, then I just need to find some water (although I have found if I use half the normal amount of water, shake it up really well then add a cup of coffee I like it quite a bit, but it gets nasty really fast so drink fast). Also, it's good to remember that this stuff should make your life better. If it makes life suck, you've gone too far. That line is variable, for some people it means never getting off the couch and for others it meas a life of lifting and eating perfectly. Just find your balance. I missed two weeks of workouts and ate very poorly because I was out of state for funerals (two of them in three days) and a 6-day work trip. It's ok though. It set me back some on lifting, I ate horrible and it will take me a while to recover, but it's all the attention to it when I can that allows me to be healthier and have whirlwind trips not kick my ass for a few weeks afterwards. Eating well and working out when it helps the rest of my life is a huge positive, but if I'd let it govern my time during funerals and other parts of life, it would not be a positive in my life. Temperance.... |

I actually eased back all weekend, I didn't track and just ate what made me comfortable. I worked all weekend too.
It was a nice little break, tomorrow I'll be back on track, 5 more lbs until my goal, 10 lbs would be great. It depends on what the weather does in March. |

I'm not a professional worker outer, but when I used to be bulky I worked out hard enough to want 5000 calories. I didn't have to force myself to eat anything, I wanted to eat everything. Are you sure you're working out enough? Enough to be gaining the weight I want and actually seeing improvement. I just naturally don't eat much. A typical work day for me is get up, slug two cups of coffee, and grab a bagel or something, work until mid-afternoon. If a break presents itself we will go grab some lunch and usually a pint of chocolate milk, work until around 6 then come home and eat supper, then before bed have another big helping of supper. I get most of my calories in the supper time window, but eating more than I need to eat is very difficult for me, I hate the feeling of being full. I don't mind that eating pattern, it gives me more energy then constantly having a full feeling stomach but it didn't do much for gaining weight. It's hard to describe I guess but normally on a hard day at work I'll eat a lot of food when I get home, enough to meet my needs for the day. If I have a lazy day with the family my entire day might only be the coffee, water or juice as needed and supper. |
| Just lifting 5 days a week I pretty much have to eat about 3200 calories to maintain my weight. I'm 6'1", I was 190lbs and wanted to clean bulk up to 205. It took me a year and was one of the hardest things I did fitness wise but I also learned a lot about my body in that time and was one of the more rewarding things I've done. This coming from someone who went from 280 to 180 in a year. Bulking "clean" is hard. Eating 6-7 meals a day sucked until I figured out I just wasn't pushing myself hard enough in the gym. I increased my intensity a ton on all my main lifts and added a crap load of accessory work. I ended up adding straight hypertrophy bodybuilding days to my routine just to beat myself up as much as I could. With the longer and harder gym sessions came the appetite. |

I've really been eating a lot lately trying to get as strong as possible before the strongman competition in March. Things I've noticed. The more I eat, the more I want to eat. I just had lunch and just kept ordering more and more food until I was full. I'm pretty sure I just downed the better part of 2,000 cals in one meal. If I have something carby at breakfast time, it really gets me ready for another meal a.s.a.p. And man do I feel stronger every day. I just squatted 365 for reps this morning and it felt like cake. I feel like I'm still getting leaner as well. I do know that I had to go one hole tighter on my weightlifting belt.
ETA: I backed off on the protein shakes and just eat burgers, or chicken tenders, or whatever instead. |

I have kind of fallen into a groove were I make a super dense lunch and then take about 2 hours to digest it before working out. Mostly a rice and beans base with lots of meat and some veggies stir fried in and then a few extra squirts of oil. They have been between 1000 -1200 calories just in one large bowl of food, so that is helping me immensely. I don't even get very hungry until near lunch time, so breakfast is a chore. Probably not ideal, but I am still gaining weight at a steady pace and it keeps me from having to feel stuffed all the time. I'm holding steady at 10% body fat too, so I feel like what I'm doing is working well enough. |

So, how does starving yourself help you eat more peeps and cola? Do they not have a strength component to CW that you could train for? Quoted:

This thread fills me with hate. I am so hungry. So, how does starving yourself help you eat more peeps and cola? Do they not have a strength component to CW that you could train for? I already trained for that, the tire lift. Pretty much a clean and press with a big ass tire. It's a crossfiter dream obstacle. The conex and rod are pretty much grip strength and pullups. Being light helps. Handstand walk is shoulders being light helps here too. Run half mile, this is what I am training for now. The lighter I get the faster I can run. I am not neglecting my strength training just not making any good gains. I want to get down to 195 and slowly put muscle back on after CW. I will probably do a complete reset on squats and switch to high bar. Because my back is so much stronger than my legs. |

my biggest complaint about CW is the lack of a real strength component. Anything strength related is almost strictly upper body, and for CW it's better to be light than strong. :( Quoted:

It's hard to make a lower body obstacle. However the run is about as lower body as you can get if you sprint the whole thing like Rusted does. |

Oh, the irony. |
