I am 46, ~208 pounds (5'10")...
I've never, ever really been a runner (always been more of a biker/hiker)..I've done it, but never really enjoyed it and up until recently the most I've ever been able to do is a two mile run before I need to stop due to my feet hurting... That is until recently. I guess my problem is that I just never realized the importance of having a real running shoe. I went and got fitted for a pair at a running shoe, and with the ones I bought I find I can run pain free without stopping for 2-3 miles. Question is, am I still too fat too run often ? Since I've had the new shoes I've been out running about twice a week, and would like to increase this to 6 times a week but I am just not sure how smart of an idea that is given all the extra weight I am carrying around still. |

You're better off running shorter distance more frequently than longer distances less frequently from an injury prevention perspective. Start with every other day or 1 day on/2 days off, then every other day, then 2 on/1 off, etc. Your body will adapt to gradually increasing training stress. |

I would really recommend walking until you lose some weight, your joints will appreciate you for it. You'll burn about 20% more calories running over walking but the wear and tear on your body is immeasurable. Set a good pace (4-5mph) and walk 30 minutes a day with a couple of rest days do this for a week and increase your time. *ETA* I've ran 5 times a week for the better part of 30 years. |

This is solid advice. My weight has fluctuated a lot in the past and its a noticeable difference when I'm 185ish as opposed to 165ish. I currently sit at 173 and feel better then I have in awhile. I think I'd be better off a little lighter to run but I'm trying to balance strength/cardio. I recently started running every other day. (Lift weights every day I don't run) and I've been seeing some pretty noticeable gains in cardio/over-all health. I'm not a big runner so my runs are typically a fast 1-1.5 mile or a slow 2-3 mile. |
