Signed up for the Might Mud Dash in Houston on April 12.   I am using the April race as a warm up for the Super Spartan in Austin on May 17.

Here is where I need some suggestions.  I got bad rope burns in the last race and need to wear some kind of ankle protection.  What do you guys suggest and/or wear to protect your ankles from rope burns?

Here is what my ankle looked like after the last race.  The other was similar.

Looks like your shoes held up much better than would be expected!

You could put all sorts of protection on there. Leather wrap. High top converse sneakers. Duct Tape. Ace bandage.

But,

The best think to do is probably work on your technique. I've never got a burn there, and I've done plenty of rope work.

How did it happen? Climbing? Sliding down after a climb? Horizontal traverse?

When climbing or descending, the rope really shouldn't be making much contact with that part of your leg. It should be trapped with your shoe/boot if you are using your feet/legs.

When traversing, I either go across commando (on top of the rope), or use the tops and sides of my shoes to support me if going across under the rope.

Traverse.  I decided to use the "monkey" technique and pull myself across headfirst while hanging below the rope.

I agree I should work on my technique.  Unfortunately, I have zero access to ropes in order to do so.

What type of shoes to wear? Last time my sneakers kept getting pulled off in the mud, and collecting tiny rocks under my soles.

I wear Cross Country cleats with the metal spikes removed. I haven't compared anything but they might fit a bit tighter around the ankle and heel area than your everyday sneakers. Try lacing them up tighter and wrapping the tongue/lace area with electrical tape.

I wore an old pair of worn Asics.  Forget which model but they were a trail runner-type shoe.    They worked just fine.  However, they were trashed after the race and I simply threw them away once done.

Also, stop wrapping your leg around the rope.

Old habits die hard.  My Sgt Instructor drilled into the the "proper way" to climb a rope.  It kinda stuck.  I get there are faster ways to do it, but without access to a rope to try out a new skill set, I'm kinda stuck with muscle memory.

The ninja rope traverse you suggest works great in fatigues, with belt/buckle, and with boots.  I know how to do it.  In running shorts, I'm not convinced my goodies would survive the journey.

ETA:   Sorry, forgot to say thank you for the link.  Thanks.

Good socks or those compression things.
