New Doc did a new patient exam, went over family history, etc... He did another hernia check and could not find one at all. Said I'm good to go as far as the gym is concerned, be careful, use good form, etc...

So last week I started out light on the weight training, using the machines, my guess is that will help with the right form. I've been on the rowing machine quite a bit and I really like that piece of equipment.
I'm going to look at either Starting Strength or 5/3/1 and start one of those programs. Which one would be best for a beginner?

I had my second hernia repaired back in January.  No fun.

I do 5/3/1, and love it.  Make sure you have someone who can teach you the proper form for the lifts.

What he said.

Machines will honestly do you no favors, need to get under a barbell, even if it is an empty one.

You will probably progress faster on SS than 5/3/1, however both are great programs.

Ditch the machines and get under the bar.

You probably need to gradually rebuild/improve core strength, which is yet another reason to go with free weights. You want to see a strong core, forget about some underwear model on the cover of "Men's Health" who does 2,000 crunches a day. Look to guys who dead, squat, and press regularly with decent weight.
