I recently sprained my ankle (monday) today is the first day I have even been able to stand on it. Some background on me I'm 25 a construction worker, and train judo/jiujitsu 6 to 8 times a week (well did haha)
Has anyone else experienced a bad sprain? How long before you were able to do regular activities? How long before you were able to train/play sports? I have heard conflicting views that its good to try to walk on it and get active as soon as possible vs the opposite, stay off it and baby it as long as possible. I went to the ER when it happened, they did xrays and all they could tell me were that there were no fractures, I have a follow up appointment with a specialist monday... Any advice or stories of similar experiences would be appreciated. |

I have sprained my ankles many times ranging from minor to bad in lay terms, and am finishing PT school so this is my advice.
If you felt necessary to get x-rays then I would be very careful about taking advice from people who cannot directly see and touch your ankle. You have to balance stressing the tissues but not too much and what that entails without actually seeing the sprain and being able to evaluate it for the severity can vary greatly. That said, you want movement as early as possible but the question is how much? That really depends on how bad it is and you have to learn what is good pain and bad pain. So, go to your appointment and I would seek PT (physical therapy) if you have not had much experience with this. |
