I'm trying to put on a little weight and get stronger, and I'm not sure how much rest I should be taking in between sets. Today I did 21 in 38 minutes. I rarely work out for longer than 45 minutes.

In general, what is the optimal workout pace for bulking and strength training? I'm resting about a minute, going to failure, then going again. I can't go as heavy at that pace. Is this too close to a circuit training pace for my goals?

Rest 2 to 3 minutes IMO. If strength is the goal, why go fast if it means you can't lift as much? Seems like you answered your own Question...

Also, why are you going to failure? What's your rep scheme?

I usually do about three minutes on upper body lifts and five or more on heavy squats/deads.

Depends on goals.

Strength and bulking are not the same. Do you want to lift the max weights possible (with decent size gains), or get as big as possible?

For max effort work: 3minutes should be fine

For speed work 1 minute

For rep work 3-5 minutes

Ok, sounds like I need to slow down. I started out doing p90x, and been resting for a 30-sec to 1 min between sets for as long as I can remember. I've always been good at leaning out, but never at gaining. Just trying to figure out what my body reacts best to. I'm eating more, as clean as possible, and slowly gaining weight (about a pound a week for the past month).

eta- thanks for the responses.

I've read that 1-2 minutes rest for muscle building

and 3-4 minute rest for strength.
