I need help figuring out if I need stability or neutral shoes or if it really doesn't matter in my case. I weigh 230 lbs. I was told in the past that anyone over 185 lbs needs stability. I'm not sure how true that statement is. I am not a pure runner. I run about 6 miles a week on a treadmill, and do another 30 minutes or so a week on an elliptical. I haven't ran outside in a long time, but that doesn't mean I won't start again. Looking my ankle structure I don't seem to have an pronation issues. My shoes wear heavily on the balls of my feet. I do run heal to toe. Thanks. |

It has to do with your form and biomechanics. Youre best off going to a reputable running specialty store, getting your gait and form analyzed and listening to what they have to say. Its almost impossible to tell if youre having pronation issues looking from the top of your foot. |

Weight alone isn't a reason to choose a motion control, stability, neutral, or supination, but weight can have an impact on gait, right?
for instance, if I weighed 50 pounds more and my legs rubbed together even worse than they do, it *may* affect my run mechanics. |

Exactly. Weight will also affect biomechanics with dynamic motion as well. So pronation at 195 lbs may be less apparent than if they were to gain 50 lbs and be at 245. Especially when we get into running and jumping impacts that can be anywhere from 1.5-8x your body weight. Those forces with more weight may cause joints to move more excessively. |

About 2 years ago I went to a local running shop called Second Sole expecting some real insight on my gate, shoe etc and to know exactly what I needed. (I was running a lot more then). The guy really wasn't any help and replaced my stability shoes with another pair of stability. (both pairs were Saucony's). There aren't any other running stores in the area besides chain stores. Last year I bought a pair of Reebok Zig Nanos. I have really liked then and seem to have no ill effects from them. I think they are neutral. They are worn out and I need a new pair. |

If you arent having any over training issues or running related injuries in the shoes, thats a pretty big indicator that theyre fine for your running style. If you just want more insight, I'll do my best to answer your questions; if I cant, if youre ever in OR I can run you through a gait analysis and let you know what I find. |

I think I'll not worry about it and buy shoes that are comfortable and look good. |

Oh wait, I forgot the only thing you guys read is runners world and born to run... ![]() My boss is in his late 50's and is a big time marathon runner. He runs a race almost every weekend. He swears by the Vibram 5 Fingers. He has 12 pairs. One race was a trail terrain and he had to go buy another type of shoes because the Vibrams were all he had. I'm not sold on them. I have been impressed with the ZigNanos I have had for the last year. |
