Hey guys, My twins are turning 12 soon and they need new bikes. I made the mistake of getting crappy ones last time, and they're just falling apart. Can anyone recommend good brands that aren't crazy expensive? A good blend between price and quality? Thanks!!

Can anyone recommend good brands that aren't crazy expensive? A good blend between price and quality? Thanks!! My experience with Trek has been super positive. We have a 7yr old model which is going strong with just regular tire-tube-brake pad changes. How tall are they? If they're above 5ft, you should look into buying lower end adult models. A Trek 3900 with an appropriate frame size will serve them until well into high school even with hard use.

Quoted: Cool, thanks man. Yeah, I think they're pretty close to 5 ft so I was considering that as well... 13 inch frame size Trek will serve them for years. Model 3500 is plenty of bike MSRP 400$ It's excellent to ride around the neighborhood, it'll be safe and fun enough on the occasional dirt trail or park too. The parts may not look top of the shelf BUT they ARE sturdy enough. My dad has a bike with similar parts with 5000km on it. |

Quoted: Also looking for rec's as far as types- I see hybrids, commuter, city, etc...they basically use their bikes to ride around the neighborhood and such. Definitely get a MTB. Both for looks (kids that age will care about them and even if your kids don't some other kid will) and performance. It'll be more comfortable and more accomodating to growing bodies too. Less stress on their bodies while still physically stimulating enough to promote growth. |

Quoted: Quoted: Quoted: Thanks, I'll look into the Trek Anything for my bros A token of thanks to my favorite Turkish member.... Isle of Skye? I'll drink to that! |

Take them into a good bike shop and fit bikes that fit them with a little room to grow. They will be able to point you in the right direction. Tell them what you're looking to spend. Trying to surprise them for their birthday if possible... you're not going to tell them bikes are for pussies and squids and get them each a C2 erg instesd?

I'm a big fan of trek and giant bikes. Mountain bikes look cool but honestly if they aren't off road riding it's just adding extra weight and a slower speed. I'm really digin the flat handle commuter bikes. They have a good strong frame and wheels with tires that can handle hitting curbs and potholes sometimes. The low gearing of mountain bikes really blows on road. This I am sure of |

I personally think Trek bikes are under-equipped and over-priced at all levels of production. Do you have a Performance Bike or an REI in your area? A lot of people hate the idea of big box bike stores, but they'll have more selection than the majority of LBSs and their bikes are generally well-equipped name brands. |

Yeah there's both pretty close I think (PB for sure, and I think there's an REI). Thanks again guys.
