Post any personal records you may have had recently, whether it be run times, weight lifting max outs or something else.  I'll kick it off with today's 545lb deadlift

130lb dead stop rows

10 dead hang dips. 3 weeks ago i was using 160lbs of assistance.

on a semi-related note: I heart 2 1/2lb plates.

You mean just regular dips?  That's pretty impressive if you were using that much assistance only 3 weeks ago!

Roland:  Just wait til you get those 4 plates on your back.  Then you'll just want to put 5 plates on there.
8/27/2011 8:58:10 AM EDT

Haha, yeah you're probably right about that...I'd have to make some major changes though I think to hit 5 plates, including gaining some weight and I don't want to do that. It is funny how goals evolve though lol...

335# squat for 8 reps.  That weight isn't a PR but that was a good solid 8 reps.  I've been really happy with the 5-3-1 workout.  That's a weight that I would've struggled to hit 5 times 3 months ago.

I swam a mile w/o stopping just to prove that I could.  It was in a pool and very slow so don't be too impressed.

ETA: my wife was giving me shit about not doing enough cardio.  I usually just lift heavy and HIIT cardio.

Dang, that's booking it at over 10mph.  Almost makes me wish I didn't hate running and love lifting as much as I do.  It's even more impressive considering where you were a year ago.  What's your weight now?

What sort of accessory work are you guys doing to bring your DL up? I'm starting with Pendlay rows, back extentions and good mornings this week to help it along. Any other ideas?
9/27/2011 10:43:22 AM EDT
[#31]
All my current DL and squat PR's are x3 or x5 sets, because I tend to re-harm my low back at 1RM max weights.  442x5 on DL and 335x5 squat are most recent.  Once upon a time I was a little over 4 plates on the squat rack and a little over 5 on DL.  I don't think I'll ever see those numbers again.  But my general fitness is far superior now compared to when I was scoring those numbers.  (I weighed about 250 then, and 185 this morning.)

I used to like being huge and bulky.  But in retrospect I was pretty ineffective at that size.  I didn't run, ever.  I pedaled a lot, but I was always the last guy to the top of the trail.  I could ski well, but I'd hit a fitness wall after a few hours.  I wish I still lived in Utah.  It would be great to ride all my local trails again in my current condition.  And skiing 90 days per season doesn't suck.

BBB format of 5/3/1.  So, I do lots of deads.  Last workout looked like this (after warming up):

315x5
365x5
415x9 (max effort set)
315x10
315x10
275x10
225x10
225x10

abs

It was not fun.

So, basically right now I'm deadlifting 1-2 times a week, I'm starting up the rows and GMs once a week and back extensions a few times a week. I can't go exclusively to a 5/3/1 because I have to keep Crossfitting too, but judging by your schedule would you recommend another day of higher rep lower weight DL?

I don't know other than that I would stick to deads once a week since they take a while to recover from.  Maybe try cycling heavy/medium/light weights from week to week.

And you don't HAVE to keep crossfitting.

LOL...I know...sometimes I contemplate giving up Crossfit for either power lifting or Oly lifting. I think I could do decent, my squat is pretty good considering my bodyweight and the fact that I'm not a powerlifter but a Crossfitter....I'd sort of like to see how strong I could get if that's all I did. Maybe someday

Yeah, it's the recovery that kills me. If I'm not careful I won't be able to do anything at all for a few days, and I just can't afford that. That's why I'm trying the assessory lifts now- easier to recover from.

I'll try the cycling I think, thanks for the advice.

For accessory work I do weighted back extentions(4x10 with 125# dumbell) and pendlay, traditional, and upright rows. Mostly though DLs are my best lift. Everything else is pretty weak.

Hey AZ do you do this all in one go? How do you manage to keep the energy going with that much volume? I find with Deadlifts I had to keep it to about 8 reps per set or I feel like im gonna hurl.
