Why have I seen golfers, swimmers, and cyclists (and all round athletic me) with shaven legs lately.

I never noticed this before, but I was at a professional golf outing today, (its pretty easy to pick out the ones who have been athletic and workout a lot), but so many shave their legs.
I had noticed in the past that a lot of weight lifters shave their arms as well.

Is this performance related, and a well kept secret? Is it just a vanity thing? I cant imagine that the benefits outweigh the cost.

Thanks for the answers!

I know some swimmers that do it to "reduce drag" in the water.

Not too sure if it really does or not but they see to think so.

Its a vanity thing.... Having little to no body hair is in vogue nowadays. Guys at my gym shave/trim their leg, forearm, and chest to show off their muscles.

If this was posted in GD it would be locked by now, after a torrent of gay innuendos.

Personally, I think being hairy is pretty awesome.

bikers shave their legs to make cleaning up road rash easier. folks that wear body armor sometimes shave their chest because it itches like hell under your armor when it gets hot. i have no clue why it would be beneficial to golfers....

ETA: as for the swimming/drag concept, i've heard that also, but unless you're an olympic level swimmer i don't see that making too much of a difference

I shave my arms and chest cause I'm trying to lose weight. Shave and look in the mirror and you will see how fat you really are. Its motivating to me.

I have in the past but mostly when I raced bikes. It is fir road rash should you get it but also for massage. Mostly though it's simply tradition with cycling. Other wise is vanity.
