| What would be the best bullit weight for A savage 10 FCP in 223 |

My Hog Hunter in .223 1:9 has a really long throat, I'm guessing they cut basically a 5.56 chamber just to be on the safe side in case people decided to fire military ammo in their bolt gun.
Oddly enough though, it seems to like the 52 gr Sierra MatchKing bullets with a ton of jump to the lands over the 69gr SMK seated 0.010" away from the lands (2.385" OAL in my gun). I would have guessed the 69 gr would have been better, both in terms of twist rate and throat length. SMK tangent ogives seem to be pretty tolerant to distance to the rifling lands apparently. I haven't experimented with other brand bullets yet, and heavier SMKs would run into stability issues with 1:9. |

SMKs can stand a jump no doubt and despite conventional wisdom, secant bullets can be jumped as well, maybe just not as much.
52gr SMKs/53gr SMKs are excellent bench rest bullets, as long as the distances are not super long and perhaps under 300 yds.? With a really long throat, I'd load as long as the magazine will allow and practice. Chris |
