6.5 for long range shooting

Do you reload? Does factory ammo availability matter?
Are you buying new, or modifying an existing rifle? Do you plan on running from AICS mags, AX mags, or BDL? Do you plan on shooting any matches where you might lose brass? There are various pros and cons to each flavor of popular 6.5 chamberings. Personally, I've had a 260 for over a decade but recently switched my precision rifle from 260 to 6.5 Creedmoor, principally due to a huge decrease in my time available for reloading. Factory Hornady 140 Amax has given me right at 3/4 MOA over a dozen 5-shot groups, and I think my own shortcomings behind the rifle skewed the accuracy average larger. I've been pleased with the Creedmoor and will likely run it going forward simply because it is "easier" for my situation and uses. That's not to say 260, 6.5 Lapooey, or the venerable Swede (a grossly overlooked cartridge with excellent, reasonably priced Lapua brass and the boiler room to push 140s around 2950fps without pressure in a modern LONG action with 26" barrel) aren't all great choices too. |
