I bought my son a Ruger American in .17 HMR for Christmas.
I need a scope for the rifle, rings at 1".

My son is 11 and will eventually use this for rodents and small game. I don't know crap about rimfire so am at a loss as to what would be a cheap to moderately priced scope that will work for both target shooting an hunting. I'd like to get him something adjustable in the 3-9 range but am open to suggestions

I was pretty happy with this Sweet 17 scope and I'm sort of picky when it comes to scopes

Killed many a critter with my Marlin .17 HMR and it.

What do you want to spend? Burris and Nikon make some nice scopes that aren't too heavy on the pocket book.

Vortex diamondback hp 2-8, 3-12 or a Vortex crossfire 2-7 with the 50yd rimfire parallax.

Weaver rings off Amazon like 12.00 and I'd look at the Nikon 3-9x40 buckmasters for 99.99 at Primary arms

Thanks for all the input, I'm hoping to keep it under $120. That BSA looks nice

Keep checking their site, scope sales happen regularly.

I got a Diamondback HP 2-8x32 on sale at Sierra Trading Post for my daughter's 10/22 but might move it to her .17 hmr as it's probably overkill for a 22. Anyway, really nice scope. I think it's a discontinued model and got it for $170.

Expanding OP's question: what good scopes are out there that have some sort of .17-specific drop compensation? Not really wanting adjustable turrets, just a correct holdover reticle. I know centerfire scopes pretty well, but I'm out of the loop on rimfire applications.

I have a Cabelas 4-12 scope on my savage 93r17, and I have not been disappointed at all. It comes with 17 and 20 grain turrets depending on what bullet you shoot. And the ballistic match for the turrets is extremely close out past 300 yards. Side parallax adjustment is a nice feature too. I have killed rabbits to 200 yards and made accurate hits a 350 yards with it. I believe I paid around $100 for it a few years back.

Probably my favorite is the Sightron SI. A really good quality scope for a great price. It's holds zero better than any of my scopes, including Aimpoints. Price is right at $125.

Sorry, I better trim it down, I forgot it shrinks when you don't have bronze.

I picked up a 4x rimfire scope from Cabelas for $50 on sale and mounted it up. We still need to take it to the range but we laser bore sighted it.
