I recently picked up a Remington 700 AAC chambered in 308.
It will be used for recreational shooting, a little deer hunting, and popping varmints while tooling around the farms. The geography and cover around here limits likely shooting distances and it would be rare to get out to even 400 yards. I am thinking something in the 2x10 range of magnification, front focal plane, with an illuminated reticle. Are there good options out there in the 1500 dollar or less range. Any suggestions are welcome. |

That looks like it would fit the bill nicely. I do have a total beginner question. My experience with variable magnification scopes is limited to scopes with capped turrets. Are the more exposed turrets like those much more likely to get bumped off zero under field conditions? |

I always found that the turrets on my Mk4 and my previous Vortex PST would indeed get turned a couple clicks when slinging and carrying it around in the field. Which is why any basic school or class you go to will probably stress to check your turrets every time you come off the rifle and get back on it. Every time. But over the years, I've found that my preference has been to stick with locking turrets, such as my two DMR's. |

Look around now for a Vortex Razor 5-20x50. They are regularly $1999 but now you can get them on sale for around $1300 as they are being discontinued. Don't let that worry you about the company or warranty though as Vortex stands behind their products.

Don't get in the 10x is what the military uses etc. The good part about having a higher powered variable is you can turn down to 10x if you want but you can also dial up to 20x you can't with a max 10x optic

What were the issues with the Gen 1's again? If I could sell my SWFA 5-20 for what I paid, I would so get that scope! |

No issues. They just came out with the Razor II scopes and are discontinuing the original Razor. The original Razor is a very good scope. One of the best. I know a guy that somehow got one of their demo models that could be disassembled and shot it for a couple years pretty regularly.
